Hell Wasn't Only For The Dead

Updated on February 11, 2012

Hell Wasn't Only For The Dead

As soon as the window opened

he was able to finally smell the stench

in the room,

and its sweltering heat,

the sunlight was blocked out,

by a blood stained sheet,

swarming flies on rotting flesh,

there in the far corner where he wept,

some bodies picked to the bone,

and a blood hound slept,

the man bent and rattled,

and whining like a crone,

there was no particle of compassion or mercy,

everything was just dull and dim,

and then the devil walked in,

the King of Sin,

he stood there looking at him,

drawing nearer,

the darkness was clearer,

fire brushed up against the devil like the tide,

his head inclining to one side,

and standing next to him was a disfigured freak,

the devil’s lips parted,

as if he meant to speak,

but only smiled and shook his head,

that’s when the man realized that Hell

wasn’t only for the dead.

Through the use of vivid imagery, you have conveyed what you want the reader to feel and see rather than tell. You're one of my favorite authors of all time. Lol. voted up:) Frankie

Fantastic, eerie and very well done. Yes, the things nightmares are made of put on paper. You paint a very vivid picture.
