Hidden Laughter, Stolen Joy

Updated on February 8, 2013

Where has your laughter gone?

Why do you now hide your smile?

What has happened in your life to make you forget you are a child?

Tell me the reason your eyes only show a blank stare

And no longer sparkle but refuse to shine.

Who took your rainbow away

Leaving instead a gray cloudy day?

Who took your joy

Leaving you such pain?

Why do you now feel nothing but shame?

What makes you want to hide yourself away?

How is it you have forgotten how to play?

You will not let anyone near.

What, dear one, what has caused you such fear?

Please, can I help you wipe away the tears?

That was a beautiful poem. Having been one of those children it really struck me deeply. Thanks for sharing, Cat

Faith and kids, thanks again for reading. We need to be the champions for the children in our lives. Abuse does go with a child forever.

tobusiness, Thank you for reading and commenting. It gives me a knot in my stomach to think of people hurting children. Children are such beautiful gifts from God.

icbenefield, this is heart breaking, so very sad; and yet, so real. No child should suffer abuse but we know it happens.

You've captured the sadness and pain in this poem, I wish there was some magic that could wipe away the tears and bring back the childish laughter.

      Great piece of writing.

      My very best to you.
