What is Higgs Boson?
There is a force in the universe ...
Like many travelers, I spend some of my free time on the road keeping up on the news in sports, politics and particle physics. I’m sure I don’t need to tell anyone of the recent discovery that Higgs Boson (also known as the ‘God Particle’) may actually exist.
Higgs Boson, as any third-grader can tell you, was named after Peter Higgs who set out in 1964 to prove the existence of an electromagnetic energy wave that runs through all things in the universe. This energy particle (aka Boson) gives mass to other sub-atomic particles, which are the building blocks of matter itself. (Someone find me a third-grader this is starting to give me a headache). This wave of energy works by simply floating by and interacting with other particles. Without it, there would be no mass to anything. (Like those donuts that floated by and interacted with me thus added mass)
Am I the only one willing to state the obvious here. I’m sure by now that we are all really thinking: We found “The Force”.
What's A Boson?
That’s right, those Star Wars movies had it right all along. There is a force in the universe that runs through all things. Scientists at CERN* spent nearly 50 years and over 10 billion dollars to find the existence of The Force. Of course, we can’t see the result because it decays almost as soon as it appears but we just have to trust the scientists who say it exists (they probably would have found it sooner if they didn’t blink).
Perhaps a Boson is actually another name for Midi-Chlorians – the tiny particles found in people who have The Force. This would certainly explain why a select few people have all the power on this planet. Think about the news media, which is pretty much owned by large corporate entities, who use this ownership to influence policies, get tax breaks, reduce regulations and just plain make money. They use Jedi mind tricks to help control the masses. “These are not rich people who don’t pay their fair share of taxes – these are job creators“
May The Force be with you
There is only one answer to the world’s problems. You must learn to use The Force for goodness rather than evil and greed.
Just imagine what we could do with some of the powers attributed to The Force:
· Telepathy – no need for huge cell phone bills any more
· Levitation – there go the frequent flyer miles
· Telekinesis – uh … find me that third-grader again
· And of course talking like Yoda – “Difficult to see, always in motion is the future”
(We might actually understand what politicians are saying!)
*CERN stands for - Conseil Européen pour la Recherche Nucléaire - Translated to English it means “and I approve this message”
