His Elusive Dreams

Updated on January 15, 2015

She loved him right from the start

fell head over heels

adored and trusted him

accepted all his elusive dreams

Together they built a life

upon the special love they shared

but she soon learned

to grow tired of his elusive dreams

Love cannot exist

in castles built on clouds

there has to be something solid

to fall back upon

While she remained starry eyed

something seemed to be

tearing them apart

he was there but his thoughts not

Nightfall would come

and while she let him hold her close

she worried about what tomorrow would bring

while he counted the stars above

Many a moonlit night

a dance by candlelight

she was entranced by the magic

till the morning light

It all just turned out to be

a most wonderful fantasy

but life cannot be lived in wonderland

there have to be moments of reality

So even though it broke her heart

she told him they must part

and she was left longing

while he went on chasing his elusive dreams

For poets and writers dreaming is part of their inspiration but to get ahead you have to add a dash of reality as well. I guess you could say we should not let go of our dreams but be sure that we can make it through life alright.

Dreams come and I don't believe they die. I think they grow into bigger and better dreams. So what once was good now we want and crave for more. A better love where we had none before. Dreams make the world a better place. Where would we be if people didn't dream of going into space? A home that could be heated by electric, gas, oil instead of wood. I am and always will be a dreamer. There are castles in the clouds. You have to believe in what you want and dreaming is not enough. You have to follow your dreams with hard work and lots of effort. I know it is different than your other comments. We all have different hopes and dreams. Where would we be if writers and poets didn't dream of a world that doesn't exist ? Have a great night.

So true Audrey. Smiles to you too.

There is a time for dreaming and a time to face reality Jo. Yes, I love that song.

Thank you Ed. I too have my feet planted on the ground.

At least one had to come to reality Mary.

Your poem is very beautiful, but sad. At least the girl was wise enough to walk away.

I love dreamers but there are limits, dreams soon die when the stomach is empty. You did a wonderful job, I also love the Joni Mitchell song.

Yes, my friend, true words ! We need bread also. Mere dreams make us weak and vulnerable. Great poem.

Interestingly sad. I suppose some even reach these extremes.

Rasma, this is so true. Life can't be lived in castles on the clouds. I love your song choice. Joni Mitchell is a favorite of mine.

Sadly, there are some who spend life chasing dreams instead of seeing the dreams in front of them. Beautiful poetry bringing us down to stark reality.
