Getting through Christmas - Poem about the Holiday Blues

Updated on November 20, 2012

Do you feel sad around the holidays?

Many people feel sad or depressed around the holidays--for different reasons, of course. Some have lost loved ones, and going through the holidays without them can be a very bleak time. Others get stressed and tired from all the expectations and demands of the holidays. Since many see the holiday season as a joyful and fun time, they don't understand the hopeless feelings of others.

Empathy from those who do understand can be a great help as people realize that others may be experiencing similar feelings, feelings that are often dark and unacceptable to many. Perhaps knowing that there are others out there who feel the same can help those affected to trudge through and just get through their periods of sadness. For some, just getting through this time of year may be all they can hope for--at least for now. Getting past it, feeling relief, and hoping that the future brings something better...that's enough.

I Could Cry

I could cry

So down

So down

Sunny out

Dark in

I can’t cry

Hate this time

This year

Rough one

Darn those

Red bells

And cheery elves

Walk on by

Duck head

Drop eyes

Go past

Just move

Buy milk

Bags and boxes

Big crowds

And sales

Stay home

Warm fire

Soft cats

Pet the dog

Drink wine

Relief

Deep breath

Stay in

Lean back

Make eggnog

With friends

And effort

Play music

Smile big

Laugh loud

Turn away

Good night

Sweet sleep

More dreams

Sad, awake

New tomorrow

Cup of coffee

Fresh thoughts

More words

New hope

Out, out

One more day

Get over

Get past

Just get by

Trees down

Lights off

Normalcy.

Victoria, sorry for being late. Yes, most of it was about Hotch's late wife. And he DID run into maybe a future love interest, but you know screenwriters. They hold the show in their keyboards. And the hug about Jennifer L. Hewitt being my secret lunch date? Well, Vicgtoria, you should know me by now that THIS hub just has to be comedy-based. And it is. She wouldn't be seen in any restaurant with the likes of me. I am just being honest with you and myself. :) and I will check you later. Safety first, Victoria. If you go anywhere...please buckle up.

I missed most of it, kenneth. Was it about his deceased wife? I saw at the end he has a love interest. Speaking of interest, sounds like an interesting hub you just wrote. :-) Later, friend....

Victoria, CM was extemely-sad. And I saw a new side of Hotchner. A sensitive side. Great writing. And yes, life does get in the way. Guess what? I did finish My Jennifer Love Hewitt Secret Lunch Date hub...finally...today. Now I can rest up. Take care, my dear talented friend and I wish for you a very safe and happy night. Regards, Kenneth

Kenneth, I didn't watch much of CM tonight, as life got in the way.... Yes, I am like you with wanting to finish something. Sometimes it's just so hard to do with everythingelse going on. Take care. Getting ready to go to my mom's for Christmas gathering....

Victoria, my talented hubwriter and good friend, thank you lots, for that wish. I may not watch them tonight, as I never know what each moment will bring...if I DO watch CM, I will think of you thinking of me..LOL, that is sweet. And you are blessed to be able to get out in public, I love coffeeshops. And you have a careful day and enjoy the time with your dog. Be careful Christmas shopping too, for it CAN be a madhouse. I will do my best. I finished a hub a minute ago...one that I had planned for weeks...now I can rest some...I hate to NOT be finished with a project. Are you that way? I will chat with you later. Kenneth, I'll be thinking of you tonight when Criminal Minds comes on. I'm trying to be blessed today, but I am sitting in a bookstore drinking coffee and messing around on my laptop, with a rental car outside, waiting for some recalls to be taken care of with my car. Then I have to go finish Christmas shopping, bathe my dog, get ready for a family visit this weekend. Crazy day! YOU be blessed, though, my friend!

Victoria . . .LOL, what a comeback about Santa missing out. That was a sharp line. Doc Spencer, I can only dream of having an IQ like his. That would be GREAT. And Hotchner, what a focused man. Yes, the characters are interesting. Not necessarily the blood, killing, and other weird stuff. Take care, Victoria and be blessed today.

Kenneth, Santa is missing out on not hiring you! :-) What about the young Dr. Spencer on Criminal Minds. He's so OCD and brilliant--interesting character. I'm not crazy about NCIS but some of the characters are interesting. Take care of yourself. Later!

12/13/2011...LOL, Victoria. He is not hiring right now. But I am kinda upset for I walked to his headquarters, nearly froze to death, and never got a "we'll call you," or nothing. Oh well. Santa does have lots of work to do. I get that. And as for Criminal Minds, my favorite character is Aaron Hotchner, for his disciplined personality and focus. I also like NCIS with Mark Harmon...he is someone I could NOT work for...too strict. Still, he is a terrific actor. Yes, talk to you later. Have a happy and safe Tuesday.

Victoria...I sometimes watch Criminal Minds on CBS. This branch of the FBI is about profiling personalities. I am sometimes fascinated with their highly-sensitive work, but I am NOT smart enough for this job. Honest.

Have a great night, Victoria. God bless you richly!

Kenneth...PS maybe an assistant to Santa???

Victoria...sorry, my post comment button went off...to continue....the orphaned kids in Iraq and Afghanistan are to be pitied. They are the ones suffering most from this war. And the people with cancer..my, my. What a world we live in. And I work at NOT focusing on my pain, but theirs. I fail, Victoria. Many times. But with God's hands, I keep on going.

And friends like yourself make me feel good.

      God bless you. Richly.

Victoria...you are welcome. And kind soul, that's you. Even your photo speaks 'humble-hearted' to me. In another life, I was an FBI profiler. Oh how I wish. And my health is in God's care. Maybe I will recover. Maybe not. Doctors tell me that what I have, Accelerated Fibromyalgia and Neurothopy are incurable--and can only treat the symptoms, but Victoria, there are people far worse than I. The little kids in Ira

I just don't get to your work, either, as often as I'd like. So my apologies as well. I'm sorry your health isn't so well. I'm glad you're publishing, though. It's going to be a very tough Christmas for many people forced into the streets of America due to the economy. Let's stay close, help those in need and share as much as possible what we have. I am truly blessed to be healthy, have food on my table and a roof over my head, unfortunately many have been forced out of this luxury.

How sad, your poem cast a dark shadow over Christmas for many, yet let's ever be thankful for the reason behind the season. Blessing to you Victoria Lynn and yours.

So true and yet if you mention these feelings you are a 'misery'.

I like the good things like, seeing loved ones but hate the hype, which is invariable more aimed at women and mothers to perform miracles and find presents unique and wonderful. I think we should boycott gift giving and get back to sanity.

Mr.FantasyLand--I am truly sorry for your pain. The holidays just bring any issues even more to the surface, don't they? I experience a certain depth of sadness, more so as I get older and more things happen in my life. By late November, I am longing for January to get here. Thanks for commenting. I wish you all the strength you need to get through this time of year.
