House Of Night: The Vampires
Enter the world of Zoey Redbird, a sixteen year old girl, who has dark blue eyes, pale, ivory skin, long burgundy colored hair and dimples, who becomes Marked by vampire in the early stages of the first book. Zoey becomes a fledgling vampire and must attend the House Of Night school. But Zoey has something all of the other fledglings do not: her Mark is filled in. This is significant as it proves that the Goddess Nyx has plans for young Zoey.
For a fledgling to become an adult vampire takes a course of four years. Not all fledglings' bodies can handle the change and some of them die. Because fledglings have to be close to adult vampires, they rarely leave the school grounds. Sunlight is very uncomfortable for vampires and hence the school is run at night so that vampires can sleep during the day.
Religion plays a huge part in the House Of Night series and in the words of P.C. Cast, "heavily pagan and Wiccan based, with a huge influx of Native American myth and legend." Some of the fledglings can have an affinity for any of the five elements: fire, air, earth, water, and spirit. Zoey Redbird has an affinity for all of the five elements which is another symbol of her greatness despite her being a fledgling.
While at the House Of Night, Zoey is placed in a room with her soon to be best friend, Stevie Rae. Her other friends include Damian, a proudly gay boy as well as Shaunee and Erin who are described as twins even though they look nothing alike. Zoey's mentor is a High Priestess named Neferet.
Subjects studied at the House Of Night include Vampire Sociology, drama, fencing, literature, poetry, and equestrian studies. Each teacher has unique tattoos on their being. Neferet, for example, has swirls that look like ocean waves and she is the Vampire sociology teacher. Loren Blake is the poetry Professor and he has lightening bolts on his face. Dragon Lankford is the fencing master and he has, naturally, dragons.
There are six books out on sale so far and there is a seventh book due to be released in April 2010. The House Of Night will be made into a film sometime in 2011. The books themselves are a fantastic read and filled with fantasy and magic. While the books may be best suited to young adults, I believe that any person can read and enjoy the books.
