Houses Old, Stories Told

By Tony DeLorger © 2012

Bleached boards under foot creak,

with the silent steps of apparitions bleak,

marking the pacing of lost thoughts recorded,

in haunted halls no afterlife accorded.

While those in beds with clenched eyes buried,

trembling in fear of a past life ferried,

to walk that line of earthbound soul,

too confused and angry to leave as whole.

Instead they wander in midnight dark,

their steps resounding in stillness stark,

moaning and whaling from pain long gone,

imbuing night with fear and longing.

For those with breath a sleepless night,

in wait of deadly deeds or fright,

with prayers all frantic and ethers filled,

they shudder with every creak and trill.

Their hearts a racing their blood all pumped,

their minds all bent and their thoughts erupt,

with escape and terror their guiding light,

they flee this hell into the night.

With vows of safety and no return,

their bare feet numb from the long hard road,

that leads away from this fated night,

into the arms of freedom flight.

And back in the halls all alone in dust,

that spirit stuck in times unjust,

continues the repetitive nightly reign,

until the sun does quell their pain.

And still the bleached boards creak at night,

under foot of careless right,

and those who flee with stories tell,

where dark and vengeful monsters dwell.
