How Many Will it Take

Updated on March 2, 2017

How many, each to perish, all to fall, after answering their duties call,

Soldiers, bravest and strong, protecting the land where they belong?

On land and on the seas, serve their country. to defend, all to please,

Fighting the enemy at every course, using strongest force, with ease.

Every young Johnny, Tommy, and Paul, fight their best, to give it their all,

Lose their lives, while our nation survives, shed their blood, standing tall.

While the people can never be satisfied, no matter numbers to have died,

Politicians still all to prey, making sure to have it their way. a game denied.

Must we all give up each, our best, to pass some mad man's own test,

Done in the name of our country and freedom, never will they confess?

Placating the ancient feudal family, established in the grand days of old,

Piling on more wealth by crook or by stealth, as long as money is doled?

When evidence is placed on each table, is the undoing of a worldly fable,

Admittedly so plain, in every way, of its disdain, attempting to all, disable.

Is the time for changes so great, its results, our success, to substantiate,

It's not about the profit to make, to progress, human caring to be at stake.

Please do lie in peace, you soldiers so brave, our heroes, now at their rest,

You do represent our country, you've so well served us with your very best.

Your loss of life was ours to bereave, as not one of us here ever to deceive,

Our country will always be great, we follow by choice, not by fate, all believe.

May our God bless you all, our faithful soldiers...
May our God bless you all, our faithful soldiers...

I join you in saluting the soldiers who so willingly give up their lives, even though sometimes the cause of the war is not in their interest. Beautiful poetic tribute!
