How To Follow Good Examples

Hi,welcome to my Hubpages profile. I am Arun Kanti Chatterjee and live in Kolkata. My mission is to share experiences etched on my memory.

Following a Friend With Unequal Steps

Our annual examination was fast approaching and I was busy in preparation. Safely ensconced on a wooden chair with a big table in front I was totally immersed in my studies, my feet twitching. The Sun had just dipped below the eye sight and I had switched on the tube lights for proper lighting. Suddenly I heard my mother calling me from the distant kitchen. I had to get off my seat to respond. When I returned after some time and began to concentrate on my studies afresh my legs seemed to hit something. Being startled I stopped studies momentarily and enquired. I was nonplussed seeing one of my school friends who had sneaked into the house desperately hiding himself under my table! He had sought to observe deeply how I had been studying. He was curled up finding me very annoyed and soon begged pardon for such an unsavoury incident.

This is not to establish that I was a very bright student and had set very good examples for emulation. It was not a job of a prankster either since he was very studious or goody goody type of a boy. But on the contrary my friend who was in the habit of following others perhaps to ascertain the style of functioning of his class mates could not make much headway in matters relating to studies and games for the simple reason that he spent his valuable time in aping others without devoting much time to put that into practice following his own dream.

There's actually no point in following in another's footsteps TOO exactly, you'll end up leaving no tracks of your own.”-Theodore M. Hesburgh Quotes

The weird incident opened my eyes to the prerequisite for examining the different practices adopted by individuals to read, play and what not. Only then we can make a comparison and assess how best to adapt ourselves to the suitable type we might select.

As is my wont I am now trying to illustrate further by way of proper examples.

We have heard the story of a man who used a novel way to get his son rid of the growing smoking habit. Like most of the teenagers he had begun to puff early and the habit became so much ritualized that it was very difficult to give up. After futile attempts at stopping the harmful practice of his son what he did he feigned severe chest pain and advised his son to call the family physician to examine. The doctor had earlier been tipped off and what the son could learn was that his father might contract a dangerous disease even by passive smoking. The son got the message and soon vowed not to smoke again. Not only that setting a good precedent he has dissuaded many wine or cigarette addicts from such habits.

Another good case in point relates to my elder brother who was a great cricket.enthusiast. In order to learn the art of spin deliveries he would closely watch the game from behind the wicket like the umpires or commentators and could properly assess the spinning of the ball and how the bowlers delivered. While we were content watching the boys play from any position outside he would ritually position himself only that way to observe the sport minutely. He was often ridiculed by his friends but he later proved to be one of the empanelled commentators of sports with sound knowledge of most of the games.Others around one cannot help but be influenced by this, no matter what they say.

Following in His Father's Foot Steps

Follow The Deft Handling

Avoid Passing The Buck

It is very easy to detect problems but finding solutions is difficult. A true boss will try to solve the problem and show the way to others without complaining or blaming others.

Customer care & services

Diffusing volatile situations and pacifying the dissatisfied customers require skills that employees need and look for. Set the best examples by taking tough situations in hand. When a customer calls for assistance, don't evade answers. Be honest with the caller about the product knowledge, assuring him that you will find the answer. Keeping the customer informed about the next step and following up with necessary phone calls is good leadership. Angry walk-in customers need prompt assistance, too. A deft handling of the situation by the boss will enable the workmen to learn and follow.

It is easier to exemplify values than teach them. Theodore M. Hesburgh Quotes.

Setting a Good Example

In different environments we may set good examples for others to follow suit.

Staff members in general don’t receive necessary inspiration from the office manuals or circulars. Good examples of desired behaviour in the workplace are best shown, not told. Good officers and superiors show good examples by demonstrating how to face challenges positively while maintaining the right attitude. Even mistakes by the makers can provide important teaching opportunities in the workplace.

A good example has twice the value of good adviceAlbert Schweitzer Quotes-

According to a Famous child psychiatrist-The only way to raise a decent human being is by setting examples. Children always love to follow and if they are shown good examples they will definitely follow suit to become good citizens.

I am reminded of another funny incident in my childhood. My friend who was doing remarkably well in the vernacular would never divulge the name of the book he followed which were helping him in obtaining huge marks in the examinations. We tried to spy on him through his neighbours when we could discover the name of the reference book he was relying upon. We gradually procured the book and the margin soon plummeted when he had to admit that he should have done well by asking us to follow the book as well since the way to happiness
requires that one set a good example for others to follow,
