How to write better

Write and be true to yourself

Writing comes from within yourself.

Your great experiences are shared, and bad moments, or from your fictional thoughts.

  • Are you a bad writer or a good writer?

  • How would you know if your skillful writing is not good enough?

  • I for one don't believe there are perfect writers do you?

  • When you sit down to write what is the first idea or sentence that comes to your mind?

  • Are you doing it right or are you doing it wrong?

You have all the words but don’t know how to put it all together in a proper text.

Writing in full sentences and in half-explained sentences, or in poor language.

Don't focus on the most popular writers, and think you will be the same that is the wrong way of thinking as a writer.

If you spend your time on everything else except for reading, certainly you are going in the wrong direction.

Don't misunderstand the actual story you plan to write about.

The problem with most writers they tend to lose the connection in writing their story instead focus on the rules of writing.

You need to guide yourself along. Don't put pressure yourself.

Read the guidelines and you will get the hang of the rules and guidelines.

The main focus is to get your style of writing out to your readers.

  • Be original

Don't change your writing process each time it is suggested to you. Once your style of writing is set out you will see great improvement in your work.

No writer is a genius, no matter how many times you check and recheck your written article, you will find a mistake that you missed along the way.

The better thought would be not to expect to much from what you write.

Always think you need to improve each time you write as you produce a new article.

  • Don't avoid a criticism.

Never be gullible as a writer or as yourself.

Don't believe everything everyone tells you about a gossip heard or on story find for yourself.

If you spend more time on looking at your messages instead of writing a new novel your writing will lack the most important skill, practice.

  • Don't wait, avoid playing the waiting game.

  • When do you believe that you are a writer?

Writing is about pleasure and getting the worst of your mind. Forget about money.

  • Do you think writing can make you rich?

Don't talk about what you want to write about and forget about it. When you talk you must also do.

Write even when you are not inspired.

You can't be an a writer if you don't write daily.

Some narrow-minded people don't know when to put all their work together. They are pretentious and wait for some miracle to come along.

At times one can be afraid to write.

They start projects and don't think much of what has been written.

A process that can go on for days.

When distracted they stop writing.

Some writers can do their best when they have more than one manuscript written. Such a situation only becomes a problem when all ends up being a procrastination.

Sooner or later you all fall into the same trap procrastination including myself and sometimes with good intentions.

My worst habit on certain days is when I research a certain topic time just slips by.

I don't mean to be sidetracked from my writing. One page leads to another and before you know it time slips by me. To continue writing an article time and patience is required.

For some writers research can easily make them procrastinators.

If you set a time on research then you are well-planned in your writing schedule.

  • Reading is not for everyone. Some writers prefer listening to books.

It is great to have dreams about being a published author or a successful author. You should not let your anticipation get in the way of you ability to live and enjoy the present for you.

It is all nice to get published but it can bring you to a stressful level. You can also enjoy being the unpublished writer.

First find out the type of writer you are, for example, which genre you want to write for and then take your work to the next level.

You can think of what to write while in the shower, or while going for a walk.

While you are engaged in something else suddenly the thoughts come to mind.

Learn about your own personal writing process before you begin to write.

Don't lavishly write about what you know slowly pour it out.

Every writer has a different approach as do I.

I don't think you should show anyone your manuscript until it is finished.

You would do much better if you are able to maintain a personal vision of the whole story.

This is when you are uninfluenced by others. Only when you are convinced that you have made it on your own then only do you show it to others.

It is normal to seek the strengths of others to see your weaknesses in writing.

  • Do you have doubt after completing a manuscript?

It is easy to fix everything else in writing but doubt is not so easy.

If you were able to fix doubt then you would have been a first time best writer and would have never had to write again.

It is very important for you to keep writing and not to miss out that skill.

You can become obsessive if you often check upon your daily sales.

You can't fix what is broken. Everything in moderation is key that includes writing.

Better your skills and see the greater improvement.

  • Who is a good writer and who is a bad writer?

The best writers are humble and the bad writers are harsh and not so kind in their wording or are arrogant.

Writing is a personal aspect of one's life.

Bad writers fake their writing be true in what you write about just like the good writers do.

Good writers are all different from their own perspectives while bad writers are all bad in their own ways.

If you write short sentences and don't know how to pace your language you are the bad writer.

If you follow the rules of writing you can make many mistakes.

Bad writers don't get to the actual meaning of the story.

  • Why does this happen?

When a bad writer is focused more on the phrases rather than the big picture all falls apart.

  • You need to figure it out

Bad writers generally never get to the point of their story. Writers that remain in the beginning of the story and don't move to the middle of the actual story.

They tend to forget where their story lies.

Bad writers respond to negative comments in a much more negative way.

A writer should behave appropriately.

Some writers fight with other authors it is senseless to behave in such a manner.

It is important to read the submission guidelines before your hurry to submit your work.

This is a common act of a bad writer.

Bad writers spam others with their links and that can be most annoying to me or any other individual.

I write to share my greater experiences and to learn more from others.

I like it when a reader or a follower corrects me in any of my mistakes.

It shows me that I need to take my time and look for the missed words or added words.

Writing is about having a stress-free life. A great pleasure and a pastime for anyone who feels bored staying at home.

If you have a skill put it to use.

I would say that a good writer is someone who shows passion in their work despite any mistakes that they make, someone who is original, and someone who is creative and tends to think outside of the box in the way they are explaining their stories or articles. great hub. thanks for the read.

Part of knowing you are a good writer is developing a style and growing with feedback. Always believe in your own originality and keep improving.

There are persons who can turn to be good writers but owing to lack of confidence or enthusiasm they refrain from writing. But I welcome those who despite making mistakes tend to be creative and produce whatever flows from their minds. Thank you for the good hub.

I really enjoyed this hub Devika. The 12 1/2 rules are great. You may like to change the first two sub-headings though. I think you have "writer" instead of "write". Very good advice though, voted up.

Some useful hints here. Writing is what I enjoy; any payment for it is secondary. I do think it's important to be clear, grammatically correct, to have progression and a conclusion, be it fiction or non-fiction.

      Jodah's correct regarding the sub-heading.

      Great effort. Ann

DDE: this is one of the best hubs I have read concerning writing...love it so much I printed it out to review often...I will keep it next to the book I am working on. You mention you like it when a reader or follower corrects you on any mistakes..in this excellent hub you typed 'narrow-mined' instead of narrow-minded...That being said, Thank you so much for the work you put into this. I love the 12 1/2 writing rules block on the right. Voted up and awesome. Blessings, Sparklea :)

Great Hub that all Hubbers should read. Lots of great information here. The only things I would add are get niche specific, write evergreen content especially here at Hub Pages, and don't give up. I make good money here at Hub Pages and great money on other sites including my own. I did start on the net way back in 96 but you can still do the same thing. Just keep adding new Hub Pages on a regular basis and learn to do research to find niches that are going to be popular today and five years from now. I really believe that if you build it they will come but you have to let them know your sites are there. Ideally the Hub Pages here at Hub Pages should be media rich with at least 1500 words of text, photos, and videos. Also include polls, and other well done information. Make each Hub into a mini authority site. I have Hub Pages that get thousands of views a day and so can you. Learn to produce your own videos and photos. And make them the best possible. Create a brand around yourself and your favorite niche or niches. And have the best content possible. Content really is king. I hope that helps someone. Thanks to the O.P. for a great Hub Page. Voted up and shared.

Some very good points and I do think we should all write in our own unique style. Trouble with all the 'how to' books and articles is that you get a string of books that all read and look the same. The truly creative writers produce something nobody has ever read before and have the courage to forge their own path.

Having said that I don't know one good writer who is not overly critical of their own work. Like you say no book or piece of writing will ever be perfect, but that doesn't stop us tweaking or fussing.

One thing I'm really fed up with hearing though is the old chestnut 'to be a writer you have to write every day.' Every one has their own rhythms. I don't write every day, I don't want to write every day, but I still produce thousands of words a year at a pace that suits me. If that makes me not a writer, then so be it.

You have a lot of very useful information here. I am one that has to write something everyday. (Read something, too.) If I don't stick to that discipline as much as possible, I will be too easily distracted. What I write may or may not be good, but what I find is that the act of writing takes on a life of its own once I start. But I admit, some days I have a horrible time getting started. Writing gives pleasure on many, many levels, but I also agree with Billybuc, one can only hope that writing will also make you rich:-)

      Take care!

However, I also know that for one to be 'not just a good writer', you need to carve a niche for yourself. Yes, every good writer reads wide.
