How to Choose the Right Topic for Your Article

Updated on June 30, 2010

Choose It Or Lose It

Choosing a right topic for your article is very important because it will determine greatly the amount of traffic that your article will draw in. Below are some very important guidelines that you could follow, and if you do, I could assure you that with time, you would gain a huge amount of traffic from your article.

Find out who your targeted market is

Whether you are trying to reach out to those who are interested in reading, making money or increasing traffic etc, it is important to focus on what they are mainly interested in and write out such articles to capture their attention. For example; if your targeted market is on hubpage users, You should write out articles that benefit more to hubpage users rather then everyone in general. For example, an article on 'How to Increase Traffic To your Hubpages' is generally an article that will receive more views from hubpage users, whereas an article on 'How to Increase Traffic' doesn't specifically address to just Hubpage users only.

Google's Top Paying Keywords

Make a search at google for its top paying keywords, being the top paying keywords means that they are very popular searches and questions that people are looking for. Thus, it is common sense enough that if you were to start writing articles on such topics, it will generally increase your chances of getting more traffic. However, please search efficiently for those high ranking keywords with lesser advertiser competition. With higher advertiser competition, it means that there are more people trying to promote the product and one of the ways could be through writing articles. You could check the advertiser competition through Google AdWords keyword tool.

Choose the right way.
Choose the right way.

Make Reference to Other Articles; Improvise On It

What makes some articles so popular over the others? It could be the content, or the title that captures the reader's attention. It is wise to make reference to such popular articles meaning that if an article which is talking about '10 ways to improve your AdSense earnings' is very popular, you could create articles such as 'New ways to improve your AdSense earnings, How to earn more money from Adsense' since you know that AdSense related article could draw attention from so many readers, your article could do the same thing too! Please do not copy content directly from the most popular article, you will just get yourself into trouble seriously.

Writing 'How-tos' Guide

Writing 'How-tos' Guide will prompt readers to click onto them if they are interested in the topic, normally 'How-to' Guides are those that are very popular among readers, because they teach readers and beginners who know nothing about the information to knowing about the stuff with that information. Another popular kind of article would be those like '10 ways to ..' It will benefit you more if you write such kinds of guide as results have prove that such guides will help to bring in more traffic

Write Whatever That's Hot In The News

If it's a hot news which everyone will be concerned about, do not waste your time and get down to writing an article about it. It could be news recurring around pop star Justin Bieber, or it could be a World news talking about some major disasters overseas. Since it's the hot/current news, there will not be much advertiser competition initially, and you would be able to draw in a large amount of readers who will be interested in such Articles.

All in all, I believe that any of this points will help greatly in helping you to Choose the Right Topic for Your Article. Generally, writing How to guide will be the best way as far as I am concerned, because they have been proven time and time again to help people Increase traffic on their articles.

I wasn't surprised how much of this related to all the marketing gear I write about - some of the stuff is almost generalised across all communications.

This is an awesome breakdown, however, and a heap of new stuff for me too!

I like it how the title of this guide is reflective of everything you said. I guess it's not ironic now, but it's what drew me to read the hub.
