Make Your Own Coloring and Activity Book

If you have ever wanted to create your own coloring book but you weren't sure how, these steps will show you exactly what you need to do. Learn how to edit drawings and photos into coloring pages, create word searches and other puzzles, and convert files to the proper types. Finally, you will learn how to upload your completed files to Lulu.com, where you can publish your finished coloring book and make it available for sale. All this without spending a penny, and without any special software!

Use free online utilities to create your own custom coloring pages and convert them to Adobe Acrobat PDF format.

Creating Coloring Pages

The most important part of a coloring book is, obviously, the images. There are a couple of ways you can create your coloring book pictures.

The quickest and easiest way to create coloring pages is by starting out with photographs. This method also has the advantage of not requiring any drawing skills. Learn how to turn photos into coloring pages.

If you are artistic, you can draw your coloring pages. Trace your final drawing with a dark, bold line and completely erase any remaining pencil marks. Use a scanner to transfer your image onto the computer. If there are any remnants of pencil lines, use the tips for removing gray in the photo coloring page tutorial, using Picnik free photo editor to adjust the contrast and exposure of the image.

Make sure your original images are large. It is better to start with images that are too big to fit on the page than pictures that are too small because enlarging a smaller image will make it appear grainy.

Once you have your image file, you will need to make sure it is the correct size and file format. Learn how to turn your coloring page into a PDF file, making it ready to upload for your finished coloring book.

Creating Word Searches and Crossword Puzzles

You may also wish to include other activities in your book besides just coloring pages. Two of the easiest activities to make are custom word search and crossword puzzles, popular activities for people of many ages. Make a single puzzle for your activity book, or create a series of puzzles with word lists built on different themes.

Learn how to make your own word search or crossword puzzle, as well as how to convert it to a PDF file that is ready to upload when creating and publishing your finished activity book.

Creating and Publishing Your Coloring and Activity Book

Once you have created a complete collection of coloring pages and activity sheets, you can use Lulu.com to organize them into a finished coloring book and make it available for sale. Lulu offers books in many different dimensions, including the standard letter size of a regular word processor document. If you want to make a book in different dimensions, remember to change the page dimensions on your word processor program before saving your files and converting them to PDF format.

The Lulu website will walk you through the entire book creation process with easy-to-use tools and excellent tutorials. Follow the directions and when you are done, you will be able to order copies of your finished book as well as sell them online at both the Lulu website and on Amazon.com.

This looks like fun-- even if you did it just for your own grandchildren. Wouldn't it be neat to have pictures of places, people animals and other things that were familiar to them?

I can also see this being done for a small community that has a historical draw for tourists-- it could be sold trough the local gift shops. This is fun information.
