How to Download New Best-Seller Books, magazines, movies and music for Free

Updated on November 3, 2015

Free (and legal) Way to get Ebooks, Audiobooks, movies, TV shows, music and magazines

If you are like me, it is hard to pay $10 or more for a digital copy of a book. I have no problem paying for hard copy books since I can always resale them or give them to my friends to read when I am done but with digital books you just cannot do that. I really think they should be significantly cheaper than their hard copy counterparts. Since that does not seem to be happening any time soon, I found a way to get almost any book I could ever want downloaded to read free and easy!

All you need is a library card and a computer. I am amazed at all the services libraries now offer their patrons. You can get Ebooks, audio-books, magazines and music downloads all for free!

One thing many people do not know is that they may be eligible to get a card for more than one library in their area. In my area there is both a county and city library I was able to get cards to both for free. I was also able to go to a neighboring county and pay $15 a year for their library card. Plus I work in a different county and was able to get a free card from that library system. Every library has a different selection of downloads, so I now have access to a large collection of free digital media. Another plus is that if there is a popular book, I can search through the different libraries to get on the shortest waiting list.

If you are thinking about paying for a library card like I do make sure you check out their selection first, it may not be worth the money. Not all libraries will let you pay to be a member and I found some that will not let paid members access digital materials, so read the fine print.

Most Libraries now have Overdrive as part of the services they offer. Many have other ebook services too but, at least for my library, OverDrive has the best selection.

If you're using a tablet or smartphone, you may want to download OverDrive's free mobile app, OverDrive Media Console, to easily find and save your library's OverDrive website and to download and enjoy borrowed titles on your device.

Get the app from your app store or from for most popular devices and platforms.

You can get books right to your from you device. Plus for audio-books lovers, there are also audio-books available through Overdrive.

My libraries all utilize Freegal for music downloads. I have been able to get quite a large collection of popular music that I like.

Freegal is a free music download service that allows you to download and KEEP up to 5 songs a week - choose from hundreds of popular artists. New songs are added daily so there is always something new!

Once in Freegal you will be able to keep track of your downloads in the upper right corner of the site. Every song has a sample clip you can listen to before you download.

The downloads on this site are all in MP3 format. This service will work with any MP3 player, including iPod, and can be loaded into iTunes. It works on both PCs and Macs.

Be sure to check out the browsing areas, especially Artists A to Z (bottom of page) and the genre lists (menu bar). Click on see all genres to view dozens of categories.

OK, now this is the best part, at least to me. If your library has Zinio you will be so busy reading magazines you will never buy another one again. I have been able to get weekly Star, OK and Us magazines so now I never have to feel bad about buying trashy magazines. The selection varies per library but it is a really great service. Another plus is you can keep them for as long as you want, unlike ebooks.

I did find Zinio a little more difficult to get started with. You have to click through your libraries Zinio link and following the instructions to set up an account - actually two accounts, your library's Zinio magazine list and the actual Zinio account. I go online and select my magazines through my library's Zinio list then I can use the Zinio App on any of my mobile devices to access the magazine.

Here is a list of the magazines my library offers for free through Zinio.
