6 Tips to Find Writing Inspiration

Updated on January 11, 2016
brakel2 profile image

Tips for writing and public speaking evolved from Audrey's participation in a Toastmasters' organization.

Inspiration is an emotional response that sets off ideas in your brain. It works like fireworks in the sky, triggered by the idea to write something special. The feeling happens when the body is in the state of quiet calm or sometimes in a state of excitement. This piece explains how to get that emotional response, in addition to exploring hot topics for article writing on the Internet. You will learn how to get inspired to write an article. Inspirations can come to writers in the following ways

.1. Journaling Inspires

The author of the Harry Potter books, J.K. Rowling, became inspired about her characters on a train ride. This knowledge shows the importance of a journal to a writer. The ideas written immediately ensure that thoughts remain for transcribing later into ideas for a story. You need to keep a journal with you at all times. If you wake during the night with an idea, be sure to grab a pencil before the idea disappears.

2. Relaxing in a Calm Atmosphere

Find time to go to a relaxing place and clear your mind of clutter. Motivation can come in the midst of calm of rolling hills and inviting lake, surrounded by clouds that look like cotton candy and sun on the horizon. You can even imagine yourself being in that place. The mind is relaxed and ready for inspiration.

3. Peaceful Writing Area

You can convert your writing area into a peaceful place with cool colors, lavender vanilla candle holders, relaxing music, and restful wall decorations. Surroundings without distractions can put your mind in a state to gain inspiration. Taking deep breaths in your writing sanctuary gets you in the mood to create a masterpiece.

4. Listening and Reading

Some writers get fired up by listening to conversations or finding ideas in a newspaper, magazine or movie. An author read an article in an AARP magazine about the difficulty of diagnosing some diseases. This led his mind to think about about lupus as a disease sometimes difficult to diagnose and to a subsequent article

Listening to conversations can also lead to an exciting topic, Restaurants are one source.

5. Reading Works of Authors You Admire

One of the best ways to find inspiration is to read the works of other authors. Reading shows the writer's voice and you can see how the author may have developed motivation for books or articles.

6 Follow Progression of Your Mind

An Internet freelance writer became interested in the inspiration factor while watching a movie about Parkinson's Disease. Thoughts moved to Michael J. Fox, the famous actor. From there, the author decided to do further research. What the writer found was a possible mystery between Mr Fox's disease and the questionable sweetener Aspartame. He found a trigger that motivated him to write about this subject. You can find good topics by having passion for what you already know or a trigger, as stated above.

However, if a topic inspires you and you don't possess much knowledge, the idea can lead to further research and a plausible article. An author had a relative whose brain was close to photographic memory, and that was the trigger for more exploration and an article on the subject. Some websites give authors topics to write about, and this usually involves research.

Good Internet Topics

Internet sites have lists of topics that interest consumers Some of the top ones are: Technology, Fashion and Beauty, Health, Children and Baby items. An evergreen topic is important; that is a topic that will endure forever and is not seasonal or a news event. You can stray from the evergreen topic, but securing traffic may be a problem in the long run.

Look in the Backyard

The backyard can be the catalyst to write about interesting subjects. If you are a gardener with a yard filled with flowers or vegetables, you may be an expert on that subject. In an author's backyard, sat an in ground swimming pool owned for over thirty years. From that fun topic emerged a long popular article with information about pools. In your backyard, you may have a trained dog. What a great subject for a story - something you love and know.

Excellent tips. I go through streaks. Sometimes I want to write all the time and other times I don't want anything to do with it. I keep a running list of ideas for those times I don't feel particularly motivated.

One thing I really need to do is develop a writing area. My writing area is in a busy part of my house. While I've been able to do just fine, I know for serious writing I need to be more private.

      Good tips, voted up.

You give some very solid advice. I have tons of interests that would make good topics, but not ones that would be very high demand. I have however learned how to tap into the knowledge of friends and family for articles. I love that you mentioned that in here. I think sometimes we get so hung up on worrying whether not we are "qualified" to write on a subject that we forget we have unlimited knowledge around us. All we have to do is be inspired, research, and write. Love this hub! Voting up and more!

Thank you NYBride for reading my article and commenting. That is so great that you keep a list. I used to do that, but have gotten away from it. I find it hard to keep a list of articles that are evergreen and have good keywords and also interest me. I usually think up ideas one at a time. I need to get better at it. I do know when I am relaxed it helps to think. I constantly read the paper and magazines and use the ideas in my article. Thanks for your tips and take care..

Hi David - Thanks for reading my article and commenting, A nice writing area can make you calm. Some people on HP put their writing sites in a blog, and many of them looked refreshing. It is difficult when you have activities going on around you or children running around. There are so many things we can do in our busy world to make writing easier. My writing area is in a separate room, but that is not always possible. Sometimes we can get used to anything, like babies can get used to noise and keep sleeping. I am glad you visited my hub, and good luck with your writing. I will look for your hubs.

Hi Sharkye - Thank you so much for reading my hub and for your positive comments. I am glad you use the idea of looking nearby for topics for hubs. It is always easy to write what you know. You are right that sometimes topics might not be in demand or have too many sites about that subject. Some of my articles fall in that category, but I guess we just keep trying. It sounds like you and I have similar methods of writing. It is so great that you found this hub, and I will look for yours. It is so nice to meet you. Take care.

Hi ruman - Thank you for reading my article and commenting. Describing it as inspiring is so meaningful to me. Thank you for sharing it. I hope you enjoy your time on HP, as you said you were new. Keep reading articles, as you learn much from reading other hubs. Hubs on SEO were helpful to me in the beginning and still help me. I am interested in reading one of your hubs. Good luck as you continue the path to good writing on this site.

Audry, What great advice to become inspired to write. I usually don't have too much trouble thinking of a topic, but I guess everyone has a dry spell now and then. I like the way you laid out the plan with so many good ideas. This is a very useful and interesting hub.

Hi sealeddreams - Thank you for reading and commenting on my article writing hub. I hope you enjoyed it. You indicated you would try some of the ideas in the article. Sometimes it is difficult to relax the mind to think of new ideas. Stress can interfere with finding ideas. That is the reason that managing to relax the mind and body can do wonders for writing. Then thinking of what you know can really help you become focused on a topic. I wish you success in your writing career. Stop by again. It is nice to meet you.

Hi Susan - Thanks for reading my hub about getting inspired to write. Isn't it amazing how a pleasant scene and relaxation can set a mood to write? I know you are an inspiring writer, and I need to read more of your articles. The HubPage community is full of friendly people. I wish I was by the lake or ocean writing at the present time. It seems like disruptions take us away from the pleasant relaxation. It is so nice to have you stop by, so I can get to know you better. Good luck.

Hi Sallybea - Thanks for reading my hub and commenting. I know what you mean about having a pen handy. I sometimes have that problem myself. The part I like the best is relaxing when you write. Sometimes that is difficult for many reasons. I love reading and commenting on hubs. That is one of my best pastimes and gives me peace. I have come across you in the forum many times and enjoy your comments. Good luck with your writing and have a great weekend..

Looks like you've inspired many with this article! For me, it is sometimes difficult just to find a little peace and quiet so I can concentrate.

    • brakel2 profile image

Audrey Selig 3 years ago from Oklahoma City, Oklahoma

Hi Writer Fox Thank you for reading my article and commenting. Setting goals to write in relaxing places is important. Realistically, it is difficult for many to meet such a plan. Writing is relaxing for me, anyway, so as long as no one bothers me while I am in the midst of editing, I stay pretty cool. You probably are very busy and with all that you do. However, the articles you write possess the quality that someone can see you in complete relaxation with peace and quiet. That is the perception anyway with a good end result. I am glad you stopped by to read this article, and the comments help me know where I am with my writing.

You have listed several important steps for writing quality aricles and I really enjoyed your hub. My problem is also finding the perfect palce to write, despite that fact I have an office all to my own. I can't sit for long periods of time, so I also have a labtop that I can take to different rooms, which helps. I think the journaling is very important, as I had always journaled then just stopped for a while when my health problems interfered. Now I am keeping a journal again. Voted up and very useful.

Thank you Pamela for reading hub. I enjoyed the comments, especially because we share not being able to sit for long periods of time. People have a hard time understanding that about me. Anyway, I hope you are doing well. I do enjoy your articles. I know you have written many with health themes. Take care and stop by again. Blessings. Audrey

I also love reading hubs, as it is entertaining and a learning experience. It really helps to keep your mind sharp with all the reading and writing. I guess we all need relaxing surroundings to take our mind off recent hackings and viruses. It sure is more fun to relax than have our minds filled with bad computer experiences and other issues. I used the record function on my phone while we were moving last month. A pen and paper always seemed to be packed away in a box somewhere. I am a habitually note taker. I used to journal but really need to get back to it. I keep saying when things slow down, I'll pick it up again, but with the move from CA to VA and trying to get set up in a part time job here, and now we are closer to more grandchildren, it is like there aren't enough hours to do it all. But I will get back to journaling, I know. I just don't know when. I rarely have 10 minutes to myself.

This article was a nice refresher for those who forget how they used to do things and a nice introduction to new writers on how to make things easier for themselves. I enjoyed reading this article. Voted up and shared.

This is a wonderful hub, Audrey. Full of good advice for the writer or aspiring writer. The right atmosphere is important to get yourself motivated and it is so important to always have a journal nearby (especially for me as I never know when inspiration may hit). As I don't have a real niche as a writer (other than poetry) I often surprise myself with the subjects I am inspired to write about, but I like that. Thanks for sharing your knowledge, voted up.

Excellent article with some great tips. I find that by taking photos of wherever I am and whatever I am doing, such as a hobby, using a product or even a day out somewhere can inspire me to write an article about it. It takes a little preparation but the result is always worth the time and the effort especially because you never have to look for images for the article. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.

Hi Rachael - You stopped by my hub and wrote some sweet comments, and I thank you. I know the story of journaling and how we all forget to carry a journal. I learned in a writing course to keep one at your bedside in case you wake in the night with an inspiration. That really happens to some writers, but these days, it seems like people just want to sleep and not have bad dreams. Anyway, it is a good idea, and I used to have ideas in the night, if I thought about my writing at bedtime. You sound like a busy person, and I just found your comment or would have replied sooner. Good luck in your endeavors and in your new home. Blessings, Audrey

Hi Jodah - How nice to have you stop by and read my article. Inspiration and how we get it is probably different for every writer. I like to know what inspires people. Sometimes I learn of an experience and that inspires me, and I still would like to put more humor in my writing. Your poetry is a great place to inspire people to think about certain subjects, like your migraine hub. Thanks for your comments. Blessings, Audrey

In addition, I like your suggestion to always have a camera to take pictures, as they really validate a hub and give it the personal touch. Your pictures show professionalism. I only have my iPhone and an old camera that has all the individual settings. I have used my iPhone for hubs, but the photos are not to my liking. Thanks for your tips. Blessings, Audrey I need a better camera.
