There are many varied aspects to making money through writing articles. You may choose to write articles for an article directory whilst working from home or offer specialist writing skills as a freelance writer. Ghost writing, report, legal, medical, marketing and web content writing are other categories you could consider when establising your career as a professional writer.
1. Choose Article Directories
The first step on how to make money writing articles is to sign-up with 3 to 4 article directories. These will be your 'bread and butter' whilst writing.
An article directory is a website that allows its members to write unique articles which are displayed on their website. Most directories have parent categories with sub-categories in various subjects, e.g.Parent category of Health with sub-categories of cancer, diabetes and weight loss.
These articles are freely distributed online and have the potential of raising the author and directory's profile as well as provide an opportunity for the author to make money from monetizing their website; for example, Google Adsense is a program that allows website owners to advertise their business on their search result pages for which they pay you a percentage.
I recommend signing up with at least 3 directories because you cannot make $300 a day through one directory.
In the beginning it may be hard to gather momentum writing for 3 or more directories especially as you have to be aware of duplicate content. All top level directories will not publish work that is already on the internet, the work must be original. That means a lot of time and energy writing and re-writing articles to suit each directory.
I write for several directories and get around the problem of duplicate content by using specialist software. I also allocate certain niches to specific directories so that there is no overlap. For example: for Suite 101 I write on health topics but on Squidoo I write on business matters.

You should also consider writing for Ezinearticles.com. Although you do not directly make money from this site, you are able to link to affiliate programs, personal websites and other writing directories in the resources area. When a visitor clicks a link they will automatically go to your sales page, and if it is convincing enough they will purchase the product or service it offers.
Ezine Articles usually rank quite high on the Google search engine which gets millions of visitors every month searching for information . Imagine the potential if you can write articles on any of the subjects these visitors are searching? The possibilities are endless.
Join the sites that are going to advertise on your article page. This is necessary so that the article directory can pay you each month.

3. Creating Unique Articles
Step 3 involves creating and submitting unique articles to the article directories you have joined. Therefore, once you have completed steps 1 and 2 you should settle down and start writing your articles.
Everyone has their own way of writing and how they order things. Personally, I choose a topic, research the subject, do a keyword search and choose specific keyword/s, for example, I chose 'how to make money writing articles' for this article you are reading by following the aforementioned steps. Next, write to your heart's content!
All top level directories want original content for any article submitted. This is not always easy to do, but if you are stuck as to what to write about you could always hire a freelance writer from either freelancer.com, elance.com, O'Desk or Fiverr.com. However, this may not prove beneficial in the long run as it could eat into any money you make, so only use one as a last resort.
The best way to create original content is to write about something you are familiar with or from any personal experience. Let's say your do gardening as a hobby and know a fair bit about planting seasons, etc, use that knowledge to write an article.
If you cannot think of anything then you will have to go down the route of researching what people are searching for, look at Yahoo and see what's trending and visit the specific pages such as health, business, cars etc and see what stands out to you. Choose from there and research the subject, read articles and reviews, make notes and then write your article.
Check & Re-check Article
When you have written your article go over it and check for grammar and typographical errors. I read in one article that if you read aloud what you've written it would highlight grammatical and typographical errors.
Once you are satisfied with the content of your article submit it to the article directory which you class as your top directory. My top directory is Ezine Articles. After that it is time to re-write your article so that you get 3 more unique articles with original content. Bear in mind original content is only content that has not been copied from some other source and is something you wrote that can pass through Copyscape.com (the site that highlights plagiarism). The point is you are going to get several hundred writers writing about the same topic but what the directories and Google want to see are different articles with wording that is not written in the same order.
Apart from labouring over your article to write 4 original versions you can utilise the assistance of an article re-writer to lessen the time spent rewriting. However, many article re-writers are labour intensive because you still have to insert the words that you want to be changed.
However after much research and many purchases later, I found an article software that does not require that you enter singular words, paragrahs or sentences, it only needs the insertion of the master copy and it will then proceed to deliver different versions of the master copy. Although the software provides re-written versions I still recommend that you re-read each article so as to ensure it reads properly and is not some 'goobledegook' before you submit it to the directories. Now, I'm not saying it is 100% perfect as I had to tweak a few words here and there after writing in order to make the sentences flow and make sense; but overall I would say it is around 90% near perfect and has reduced the time I spend writing articles by half.
