How to Make an Ebook Cover for Free

Updated on June 16, 2013

E-books

Electronic books are today’s answer to a fast paced, technology driven society. Books are still being read, just differently. Fewer people take the time to purchase a book or borrow it from the library. For many, pulling it up on the Internet for instant viewing is the preferred method.

E-books have become a popular feature of online businesses. By choosing to offer your book in an electronic format, and marketing it online, you gain the benefit of being a published author with little to no personal capital invested.

Professional looking e-book covers can be produced right on your own computer. It can be done using word processing software, desktop publishing software or graphics editing software.

AUTHOR'S NOTE: some of the most valuable E-books that I have purchased were delivered by email as a pdf and created using Microsoft Word or a similar program. They looked very nice but the content is what made them worth buying!

How To Do It

Step 1 Decide what topic your e-book will be written about. Select a theme based on your passion and expertise. Your natural enthusiasm for the subject will make exciting reading for others.

Step 2 Pick a title that will grab the interest of the reader from the start. Search its popularity using a keyword search engine, to verify that others are drawn to it as well. You may find that your title is a winner, or you may want to adjust it a bit to come closer to the most popular searches in your subject area.

Step 3 Plan the style you will use for the front cover of the book. If you are going to sell it, you may want it to look much like popular hard-copy books that are on the market today.

Many authors, though, are using e-books for a different purpose altogether. They use it as a marketing tool to build an email list. Often, they will give the e-book away for free in exchange for readers signing up to receive newsletters and updates. In this instance, a report-cover style may work best.

Step 4 Select your software. Word processing programs can design great e-book covers without the need of special software. You can write the entire book as part of the same document and save it in pdf or html format, making it easily available to most online viewers. If you have access to graphic editing or desktop publishing software, more elaborate covers can be made.

Trial offers of e-book cover software programs are available on the Internet, as well. The distributors, of course, are hoping to gain paying customers from satisfied visitors who try it for free.

Step 5 Grab the readers’ attention. Consider what the viewer will see at first glance. Create a concept of what you are looking for by sketching it on paper first. Choose the font, the color scheme and type of images that will best portray what the reader can expect to see inside.

Step 6 Locate high definition images online for a visual appeal that compels the viewer to want more. Websites with free, professional photos and images are available.

Keep the design interesting but easy to read. Entice potential readers to want to look inside. Avoid making them have to work at guessing what your book is about. They may not stick around to find out.

Step 7 Put the final design on the computer. Expect to make some changes, as you see it come to life. When you are satisfied with the final result, save it. Then, save a copy in the format in which the book will be offered to the public.

Sinea, I found this Hub yesterday while "hopping" around. Lots of good information here and you make it sound simple to create an eBook cover. Branching out into other eBook areas was REALLY smart. Thank you for sharing so much good information. :)
