How to Write a Good Magazine Article

Updated on February 27, 2014

Grab Attention

A well written magazine article grabs attention. It lures the reader into the article. It nabs the reader with a hook. The first sentence is crucial; it introduces the article's topic.

Hook the Reader

Imagine a boxing ring. The fighters gauge each other. One steps in and punches. He misses. His opponent scores a right hook. The first boxer non-pulsed scores a knockout.

The magazine writer must score a hook with the reader and knock him out with the article. He is hooked in the article's opening and drawn through the text.

Striking Lead Techniques

A striking lead technique to use is an anecdote. This method is particularly useful when writing a feature article. Get the expert you are interviewing to explain an interesting incident, or an amusing true tale. Provocative quotes and surprising facts or statistics make good hooks too.

Focus with Slant

The slant is important; it gets the article focused from a broad subject to a specific idea. If you approach the editor of a magazine, or newspaper with an idea, he might request a specific slant. It is best to have some slant ideas of your own to pitch. He will probably ask you to interview at least two qualified people.

To write an effective article, slice the idea down from a larger subject to a smaller specific topic. For example, a writer has an idea about sunken ships. He narrows that to ships that sunk in a certain region; he could slice that down to war ships, cargo ships, or cruise ships. If being that specific doesn't aid in producing enough research material, then sunken ships in a particular region should do well.

Another component of article writing is research, which can be done through interviews, reading articles or books, or gathering information from the Internet. If you write an article about sunken ships, interview experts that find and explore them. If the writer is an expert on a subject, he can write from his knowledge. Once he has written the first article, the research gathered can be used to craft more articles with other slants.

Review Facts

It is important review the facts used for the article and make sure they are correct. Names should be spelled right, and it is vital that your article body points to your ending.

Good Ending

The well written article has a good ending. The article can end with a quote that relates to its slant and sums it up. A non-repetitive statement that propels the main theme home to the reader. A paramount question to mull over is another good ending.

An effective magazine article has a hook, a slant, and a good ending. Put them together to punch the reader's attention and ring his bell.

You would think article writing would be different for businesses. In reality it is not. With a business article you are sharing information which has value to the reader. Your first sentence has to pull them in, inside you have to give them what they came for, and you close it off with bringing them back then letting them know the action you want them to complete.

Voted up interesting and sending the URL to my twitter followers. Thanks for the visitors you have been sending me.

I found it really frustrating while writing a good magazine article. You need to be sure on subject, grammatical errors, and pattern of writing.
