I Am Not. A Veteran's Love

Updated on November 9, 2014

We are not the same

The smell in the air

It smells of copper somewhere

That smell in the air

It screams of death somewhere

Not mine and not yours and not theirs

It smells and I cannot kick that smell

All around me burns like hell

But it is that rancid smell

Burning flesh and cordite scent does not prevent

The smell of horror that is hell sent

Leave me here to die for I am wounded and should die

that smell of copper comes from my thigh

But the other same smell of copper is comrade nearby

please take me away from death

and give my brothers my dear breath

Thank you Dora, a little different for me. But it just came to me to write it.

Lots of reality and just as much emotion in this piece. Good job, Eric.

The physical sense it invokes. I don't know war--but this is touching to me.

What a touching tribute to the real heroes!

You expressed very effectively in few lines. Voted up!

I tear for my friends who suffered so.

YES! Far too many die on battlefields, my friend, and far too many of those for economic reasons...I'm sick of death.

Hold on there Faith. I am just not worthy of my block of men and women who have served me. If you feel this honors them, then I am humble and even more in their debt. I am but a writer and they are my heroes.

Wow, poignant and profoundly expressed! You are a great poet.

      Up +++ and away
