I Hope You're Ready

Updated on May 16, 2014

My Sweet Child

I brought you here when you didn’t ask

Keeping you safe was a daily task.

When it was cold I kept you warm

Snuggled tightly in mommy’s arms.

When you fell and bruised your knee

I wiped off the dirt and kissed it gently.

I kept you from strangers and dangers alike

I taught you how to ride a bike.

I laughed and cried as you peddled away

Trying to hold onto this day.

I showed you how to cross the street

Without making mommy’s heart skip a beat.

When the bus first came for you

I did not know what I would do.

Send you away for hours on end

Could my broken heart ever mend?

I told you that it would be okay

When that bully pushed you down one day.

You are more than you’ll ever know

This beauty I have been watching grow.

Birthday parties and camping trips

By your side through joys and hardships.

The first time you had a crush

Seeing your cute little cheeks blush.

Wiping your tears from your first heartbreak

Sharing with you my many mistakes.

Teaching how to drive a car

Praying you’d never travel far.

Watching you as you graduate

What will be my baby’s fate?

You’re growing up and it’s bittersweet

The world will soon be yours to defeat.

Quite a journey it will be

This place is not always so friendly.

I’ve kept you safe as long as I could

Through every day of your childhood

You are no longer a child and I am afraid

The horrible mess these people have made.

While I had kept you from all the bad

A field day the world did have.

They’ve bred a hate that I can’t understand

This was not the life that I had planned.

I will always hold your hand

But on your own you must learn to stand.

I’m sorry I can no longer keep you secure

Many scary times you will endure.

I can only pray I’ve done my part

To help you have a sturdy heart.

I could not save the world for you

I’m sorry it was the best I could do.

I will have only done enough

If your child’s life is a little less rough.

I hope I’ve made you strong and wise

Maybe, you can stop the world’s cries.

Find a way to stop the hate

Turn it to love, make a clean slate.

I’m sorry I’ve placed this task on your shoulders

You will understand it when you’re older.

I will never leave your side

But the truth from you I cannot hide.

You will do the same as me

One day I know you will agree.

I hope you think I have done fair

I’ve tried my best not to err.

You will keep your children safe too

They will learn their strength from you.

I hope that I have done that much.

Nothing is like a parent’s touch.

"Teach Your Children"

You Who Are On The Road

Must Have A Code

That You Can Live By

And So Become Yourself

Because The Past

Is Just A Goodbye.

Teach Your Children Well

Their Father's Hell

Did Slowly Go By

And Feed Them On Your Dreams

The One They fix

The One You'll Know By.

Don't You Ever Ask Them Why

If They Told You, You Would Cry

So Just Look At Them And Sigh

And Know They Love You.

And You, (Can you hear and)

Of Tender Years (Do you care and)

Can't Know The Fears (Can you see we)

That Your Elders Grew By (Must be free to)

And So Please Help (Teach your children what)

Them With Your Youth (You believe in)

They Seek The Truth (Make a world that)

Before They Can Die (We can live in)

Teach Your Parents Well

Their Children's Hell

Will Slowly Go By

And Feed Them On Your Dreams

The One They fix

The One You'll Know By.

Don't You Ever Ask Them Why

If They Told You, You Would Cry

So Just Look At Them And Sigh

And Know They Love You.

      Theater girl,

Aww, thank you!!! I haven't heard this song in so long, but when writing the hub; it kept playing in my head! Hippie parents, haha! Mine are 12 and 8 and I can relate to what you're saying. I used to think I'd only worry when they were little, but a new fear takes over when you think of them going out into the world on their own. If you even stop to wonder if you're doing enough... you're doing enough! (There is no such thing as too much, so long as you don't worry yourself sick :-)

Thank you girl... I'll definitely be by your way later!

I am making my way through your pieces and I am glad to have found this one. First, love the song, always a fave thanks to my hippie parents. Secondly, my children are still young (8 and 6) and I wonder daily if I am doing enough, too much,etc.....:) Great job!

      Rajan,

Thank you, I really appreciate your kind words. I might not be writing any poetry books in the near future, but these are thoughts that run through my mind daily and I had hoped that others could relate.

Isn't it true, our parent's wanted better for us and we wan't better for our children? We will make it better for our children... I can feel, something's gonna give.

      Thank you so much.

      vandynegl,

You're too stinkin' funny... you're a real mom. I always say I can't stand "soccer moms", I coined this term to refer to the PTA-type mothers that dress up for soccer games and talk about how wonderful their marriage is, how perfect their dinner came out, how beautiful their home is and how their children are sweeter than honeydew. Blah, blah, blah...

Oh my goodness... too funny, thanks!

      vandynegl,

Thanks girly! I know exactly what you mean. You know what? I always have a moment on these special days (Mother's Day, my birthday, Anniversaries), where I get emotional... I don't know what it is, but I try to shake it off and just enjoy the day... I think it's something about having "attention" directed toward us when, as mothers, we're always giving our attention to everyone else.

Too cute!!! It's funny, I have 2 older brothers, that's it... one used to beat me up and the other used to play with me. I have been so close to my brother and keep trying to convince myself that my kids can have that... nope, not gonna happen. I guess when you have a 12 year old boy and an 8 year old girl, they're not going to have much in common. They can't even be in the same room together... I'm serious, I'm actually thinking about building another house to store one in and keep the peace :-)

Kids, they are grand aren't they? Something tells me you're a heck of a Mom though! Happy Mother's Day to you girly...

      Beautiful Cat :)

Sad and beautiful! It's Mothers Day today and I feel blessed to have my beautiful (and bad) children, but feel pain and hurt for those who have lost their babies. But instead of dwelling and worrying, I must make the most of each day with them, and not take a moment for granted.....even now, while they are beating each other up and supposed to be in bed. Sigh.....they love me, right?!

Maybe 'disciplined concern' would be more appropriate, and accurate than 'worry',as at least it can spur positive action to get things done, like you do,as opposed to just a burning of nervous energy, with no effective consequences, which 'worry' seems to carry.

I'm glad that you are a hopeful woman,Cat,because it matches you perfectly;your wisdom also matches your beauty.

      Cat

Just stumbled upon this hallowed turf;I hope your sensibilities are not affected, seeing as I'm fairly new here, but I've got to say, that the very fact that you have created this Hub,shows just how much of a caring, conscientious, capable, and loving mother that you REALLY are.

Any son or daughter would be proud to bring honour to you, because you have such an enormous heart. If I had had a mother like you, when I was their age,I would have slept like a filthy baby, every night of childhood, safe in the knowledge that a magnificent Angel had been sent to the Earth by God,to watch over, nurture, and nourish body and soul.Who could ask for more?

The additional fact that you've managed to parade all of these fears,in such a highly original, and heart-rending originality in verse,as well, just blows me away.

Cat.... I was right ....you are special, and so beautiful, that your love for your family has the echoes of eternity emanating from your very self.

Don't worry about a thing;you are doing your best, and no one could ever ask for more.

      With ever-growing fondness;

      Dearest Colin,

I thought I understood you to be going through some low times and I have been thinking very much of you. I might not know how to make the sun shine in my own life, but I will blow all of the dark clouds away for you any day... if you ever need me, ever... just call. You are such a wonderful, compassionate man, it bothers me so to know you are struggling, though I suppose none of us are exempt. Just know that you are in the hearts of thousands and admired by even more!

Yes, we needed to meet, I couldn't imagine not knowing my Colin... I don't know how I've made it this far in life without you!

What a beautiful image... wish I could be there with sippin' on a cold one and workin' on a hot Jamaican patty and onion rings (stomach gurgle), cool jazz and even cooler cats!

Sleep well my dear... my thoughts are with you!

Here is a virtual tuck you in with a soft kiss to my favorite 3 Candadian amigos, from the other side of the lake!

It was fate or karma that we met in this lifetime and it was a grand day when we did.

I just arrived home from night shift at lake erie time 4:40am and listening to some really cool Chet Baker jazz sounds with a beer , two hot Jamaican hot patties and some onion rings.

Both cats are out on their deck and the moon is on the wane over the lake .

I will drop by and see you later on today after my sleep and I sincerely hope your doctor's appt. went okay.

      My sweet, sweet, dear Colin,

You just know how to bring me into the right kind of mood! I am so honored by your supportive words, they mean so much to me because I think so highly of you. You are a master of poetry and the King of the Hub.

Oh it was a beautiful day wasn't it? This was the first day on this side of the lake that the sun actually heated up my skin. Unfortunately I was stuck inside of a doctor's office for the bulk of it. What a walk by the lake must've been like; I envy you!

One of the things I love most about you Colin, is your ability to be spontaneous, you do not restrict yourself to any one subject matter. Each day is a new suprise, sometimes I laugh, sometimes I cry and sometimes I do them both at the same time! I don't think there's a subject you haven't covered and done so beautifully, but I would love to see your take on "picking yourself up again". Just in life, in general, when things get you down, how do you get back up? This is very personal for me because I am going through one of those low points in life and your words always inspire me.

Thank you for being such a true friend and so giving when you are in need yourself of love and support.

Sending the biggest hug and kiss on the other side of the lake just as the sun goes down. And you can give an extra treat to the kitties for allowing this Cat to share with them!

One of the most beautiful and profound poetic odes to motherhood that I have ever read. I am crying inside here. I wish I could on the outside (but these pills really shut me down) My mum was my best friend (as was my dad) so your words had quite an effect on me.

I just woke up in my crypt after night shift sleep and it is currently 12:15pm - Mister Gabriel woke me up after 4 and a half hours sleep so it's not enough (I will go back later) but it's such a sunny and glorious day here by the lake I decided to stay up with a pot of coffee and some lunch. I must go out now and sit on my deck with my two buddies and then go for a walk along my beach.

I love challenges my dear Cat - are there any subjects that you would like me to write about?

Thank you once again for these most pure unconditional words as you are not only one of the greatest minds/writers I've ever met but also one of the greatest moms too.

Peace be with you and your familys always and it's better to have loved than to have not loved at all.

      Your Colin,

can't you hear me purring ......................

      gmaoli,

I'm sorry to hear you were bullied... but look how you turned out! Being bullied for having "too much money" that's a new one. Kids really will find just about anything won't they. I really just started experiencing the bullying this year. My son is dyslexic and receives "reading help". He was being pushed around, knocked down and called a retard because of this. The part that breaks my heart is he was so ashamed of himself that he didn't tell me this for months. I could tell something was up but he just was too embarrassed to share it, as if these kids were right. My biggest goal as a parent is to help my kids build healthy self-esteems. The world is so rough and people can be so cruel... I want my kids to know that they are more than enough.

Sorry about the ramble, but I really sympathize with what you've been through after it has touched me the way that it has.

Thank you so much for your kind words and sharing your experience!

This is quite a strong poem, Cat! The line about the bullying really got to me because my mother had to be my side a lot when I was kid. I was bullied a lot when I was young and merely over the perception that kids thought of me as a rich snob because I came from a family that was and still is well off. She was always telling me how really incredible I was and to ignore what the others said and she always stood up for me! I'll have to be sure to share this around my FB page. Loved it!!!

on the other hand - you know exactly what your role is - to make them independent and self confident - and i see - you're well on your way!

      Lesley,

Thank you so very much. I assumed these would be feelings most mothers could relate to. Isn't it funny how our parents told us that they want better for us, we repeat that to our children's and I guess that our children will repeat it to theirs. It is true, we do want better, I'm just afraid that our kids will have to work harder for better.

That poem has come straight from the heart. You have written in such a beautiful way exactly how I feel as a mother. We can only protect them for so long and its a scary world out there. All we can do is our best and as you say, they will then do their best for their own children.

Very beautiful, poignant and direct to the point. Being responsible is much more than a skill,it's an attitude. It is up to parents to instill that willing, winning mindset, while showing their kids what responsibility entails. It is more than doing a few chores. It's about kids taking charge and making a contribution to the family and to the neighbors as a first step and to then to the world as second step when they grow up far enough and when they raise up their own families, they will do the same what you instilled to them to their kids and so on and so far..Of course if we want to have a beautiful world. That s the way to it!Thanks for this perspective.Voted up

I am honored. My kids are freshly 12 and 8, I forget to just stop and stare sometimes. Life moves too fast and if we don’t appreciate the scenery along the way, then where we’re going won’t mean as much. Thanks a lot!

      Vacation Trip,

Thank you. Children are the epitome of innocence. Keeping them safe in a not-so-innocent world can be a challenge.

      Thanks again!

      Billy,

Thank you! When you can look back and be pleased with how you've done as a parent, that is the best reward you can have. I'm guessing with a Dad like you, your son can handle this world!

      sallybea,

I don't think we can be trained for a job like this, but if we try our best, it will pay off. We spend how many years protecting them from the simplest things and then send them out to a really scary place. Thank you so much!

Lovely work, Cat. My son is now 28 and I look at him and know I did my job well. I can't protect him from everything now, but he is strong enough to stand on his own. :) Good job, Mom!

Nice one Cat, the hardest job in the world, a job which none of us ever gets much training. You can only do your best and hope that you send your children out into the big bad world with enough skills and charisma to handle it with ease. It breaks my heart to see those tears running down the face of the soldier. It breaks my heart to think of those bombers who did such evil. It seems that not every parent does not get it's right first time. We can only hope and pray that we do it right.

      rmcmillen,

Thank you... I'm sure every parent can relate to the joys and the stresses of raising a child... especially today!

      Thanks again!

This hub may very well be emotional kryptonite to any and all parents out there..... that's all I can say about that.

Very beautiful Cat. There's nothing like the experience of being a parent.
