I Know I’m Different

Updated on October 6, 2011
Source
Source

Please don’t judge me for the way I look

I know I’m different

Please don’t talk about me

Like I’m not there

I still hear you

Don’t be cruel

Laugh and poke fun

I am me

And God made me this way

Please don’t stare

That’s more than I can bear

Look further

Peel away my layers

For I have so much

I have love to give

In abundance

I have joy

I want to share

I have knowledge

I can teach you

It may all be hidden from view

But believe me all I say is true

My trials and tribulations

Made me strong

Come share my strength

Don’t be afraid

Take my hand

And feel my warmth

Come get to know me

You’ll find out

I’m not so very different

For deep inside you’ll see

Really I am you and you are me

I like it. It reminds me of a poem similar in content that I wrote called Dare Not To Know Me. It is at the bottom of this hub if you care to read it. https://hubpages.com/relationships/Is-Friendship-R...

I voted this hub up because it is good.

Difference is where beauty and uniqueness (is that a word?) lies. I love this poem, Movie Master, so well said. It's the differences that capture the heart and the eye - sameness is everywhere, sameness is common. A great poem with an awesome photo to prove the point. All my votes to you :)

To judge a book by its cover is to risk missing out on the gold within its pages...and all too often we do that, not realizing how hurtful that can be. Thank you for writing and sharing this. If it gives just one person pause to look beyond what their eyes see, it is worth it!

      This is one wonderful poem!

If only we could all look behind the physical shell we would see the true beauty of many people - this is the real worth of a person, not what the physical shows us. I think this beautiful poem expresses this in an exceptional and profound way. I loved it!

Movie Master: I can't help but wonder what inspired you to write this poem --- was it a tree with a hitch in its middle? Nature in many ways is so much more understanding and accepting of differences than humans are. I love the ending: "For deep inside you’ll see Really I am you and you are me." This would be a peaceful planet if those lines were taken to heart. Thanks for sharing this poem: each time someone reads it, there's the chance for a ripple effect.

This verse reminds me of the actor who is on "Dancing With The Stars" this season..."Martinez". He was burned over his head and face in Iraq as a result of a roadside bomb. He returned home after military service and much reconstructive surgery with enough drive to land an actor's role in one of the soap operas. He is disfigured but when you learn the story behind it all of that goes away and you see only the person beneath. If we could all be of such vision what a better world it would be. WB

This is the most touching and poignant description of stigma that I have ever read. Each one of us feels "different" in some way, such a universal trait that is evident by the number of beautiful comments you have received.

My sweet Mom always told me "Maria, what a boring world it would be if we were all alike. Be your own person. Be different." I think we should all listen to the smartest person I have ever known, and I thank you for this reminder. Voted UP & UABI-- amazing, mar.

Beautiful poem! And the photo you chose to illustrate the poem is perfect! You have said it all in one simple poem. To everyone who has felt disenfranchised at some time in their lives, this poem is a must read! Voted up!

      Simply put, I loved this.

It brought a really big smile to my face and put a prayer in my heart for several I've had the privilege to meet through the years.

The photo of the crooked tree was the perfect shot for this.

What a beautiful and heart felt poem!! I can understand the underlying message. Everyone is same within for everyone has flaws. The world is cruel but there are few who do not stand and stare but try to understand and become a friend.Your hub speaks also of strength and courage to face such people and also make them understand that no one is different as you say

      "For deep inside you’ll see

Really I am you and you are me"

That tree photo is a perfect match to this wonderful poem of yours. Yes, it might not match what is considered to be the norm of beauty for straight upright trees, but whatever caused it to grow in that fashion made it unique and equally beautiful...just in a different way. Loved this! Many up votes!
