I Loved Her Till I Cried

Updated on June 8, 2016
Back From War
Back From War

My dried weary eyes steadily fixed on her smile
An old warrior like me staring into paradise
She rubbed her tiny hands along my war torn face
And Whispered in my ear, "I love you daddy," her tiny voice warmed up the place
I hugged her and held her closely to my bosom
My heart pounded with joy, i was back home alive, to see my baby bloom and blossom
For the years i were away, I saw people suffer and my friends die
But that smiling picture i had of her in my wallet, gave me will to live, will to survive
I would have failed her, if i did not make it back home
Failed her growth, failed her graduation, failed her marriage,
I have to see my baby through, despite the wounds, despite the death, despite the blooded bandage.

When missiles flew over my head at nights, and the shells shattered lives
All i wanted to do was to go home, see my baby and my beautiful wife
I heard men scream like children who lost their moms
I have seen families destroyed by gunfire, bullets and bombs
But in all this, just the picture of you smiling as kept me sane
To lock out the evil around me and soothe my pain
Tears ran down my face at nights when the tanks sleep
How much i would give to tuck you in, to see you asleep

But things have changed now, now your dad is back
I have no need to look at that picture again in my back pack
For i now can see you, the joy and meaning of me being
Now i will never let you go

Really cool. Grace and goodness are so often transferred through a child, especially your own. You captured a wonderful feeling here.

Powerful and heart-wrenching, Clive. Love this poem. It speaks to the voice of the soldier we rarely hear because they keep so much inside. Thank you for giving us as readers the opportunity to imagine his humanity as a father. After all, this is what poetry is all about. Well done, as always. Sharing and tweeting.
