I Shall Do the Same

Updated on July 15, 2017
shanmarie profile image

Shannon is a passionate individual whose feelings and thoughts sometimes spill onto the pages in the form of poetry.

Don't, And I Shall Do The Same

Don't worry about me, pray for me instead

And I shall do the same for you

Don't cry for me if you cannot do so then let go

And I shall do the same for you

Do not pity me, but you may have empathy

And I shall do the same for you

Don't try to change me, accept me as I am

And I shall do the same for you

Don't try to understand me if you cannot, love me anyway

And I shall do the same for you

Don't judge me in bits and pieces, remember that I am only human

And I shall do the same for you

Don't get angry if I should step out of line, rather just forgive me

And I shall do the same for you

Don't criticize me if I slightly change, watch me grow instead

And I shall do the same for you

Don't dwell on the negative, always focus on the positive

And I shall do the same for you

Do love me unconditionally, no strings attached

And I shall do the same for you

Aw, thanks, phoenix2327. My favorite explanation of what unconditional love really is is 1 Corinthians 13.

This could be read as a poetic marriage vow. Love the repetitive lines which really drives the entire poem forward.

You are a deep, soulful, sensitive and philosophical writer who always explores what so many of us are really thinking but perhaps do not have the artistic skill to say/write them as you have done so effectively here.

Sending you warm wishes and good thoughts from Mister C and his cats at lake erie time canada 9:12am

You're very generous with your praise, Epi! Thank you. I appreciate it.

I am pleased you think the repetition helped because I almost thought it was becoming redundant.

Yes, I suppose it would especially apply to a marriage relationship, but this piece is personal to me because it is what I ideally want from my friends as well.

Inspiration hit me when I was trying to get to sleep, so I had to get back up to go write it down - or I never would've gone to sleep. Oddly enough, those aren't the words and ideas I jotted down that night, but but I still had the concept on my mind the next day. This is what became of it. LOL

As for philosophical and deep - that's a curse! haha I pick things apart too often just because I ponder them for no good reason other than I can. Not a trait that does me well in most situations, unless I keep my thoughts to myself.

Awww, Shan, this is beautiful!!! We always say do for me, but 'don't' may just be so much more important! Oh my goodness girl, this is beautiful and I love the selflessness and the pride and the unconditional love, all at the same time! And those pictures... oh you're so stinkin' cute!!! Love it shan, but I always do!!!

      Up, beautiful, awesome and sharing!!!

Haha! Thanks, Cat! I'm not very photogenic - those are a few I actually don't mind. Had a few awkward years mixed in my younger days. Hehe. . .don't we all?

Don't know about selflessness, girl....it's all very selfish of me! Haha. I would expect those things if they were something to demand. It is not a concept many seem to understand. But, oh well - when I love, I love with all my heart regardless.

I agree that "don't" is equally as important. . .mentioned earlier 1 Corinthians 13 is my all time favorite quote about what love is.

Oh come on shan, nobody thinks they're photogenic 'cept for arrogant people, 'course you are! Hey, we grew up in the same era... I bet we could both laugh at each others' pictures, especially those hideous clothes my mother insisted on putting me in in the 80's, but at least everyone else was wearing 'em then too :D

No, I don't think it is selfishness, really... some of what you're saying is "let you not worry" .... do this instead.... you know what I mean? I get what you're saying... you're also standing up for yourself, which trust me... I understand how important that is. I love the same way girl... but we just have to be careful that when we love unconditionally, it is to a deserving party who has an unconditional love in return... even if it presents itself differently.

Absolutely Beautiful shan.... keep 'em coming... you're saying what so many feel and what needs to be said!

And thanks for the compliments about the poem. I truly do appreciate them. Yes, I am careful who I let get too close to me. Well- most of the time, I am. But there are multiple ways to love. Even toward those that are not friends or family (and sometimes those that are), love is not always a feeling, but rather actions.

No, you're a turd!!! You aren't arrogant you goofball!!! I think I get you very well. You are humble and modest and consider yourself not to be photogenic... it's people not like you that are arrogant, you nut :D

You are right, there are many ways to love and I hope you are careful; but if you're like me... wolves dress like sheeps and sometimes they get us :D

This is beautiful, and it works in many different relationships, from friends and family, to lovers. This is what love is really about- doing to others as you would have them do to you, and letting each other live and grow, and make mistakes, and love without strings.

This is quite beautiful. It speaks of an "ideal" relationship. When 2 people truly care deeply for one another, the giving & receiving is equally shared. In this world of ours with all the greed and diversion, it may seem impossible. But as your lovely poem explains, just be to someone what and who they are for you!

      Good job, Shannon!

Hi, Paula. That's exactly what it is - ideal. And I will be the first to admit I am not even as idealistic as this poem depicts. Though I always saw it as just an ideal and rare, I have taken a few hard hits that left lingering scars even after going forward. Idealistic is great, but rare.
