I Walk The Streets

Updated on April 27, 2017

Beneath my hat, my collar, warmth I seek,

As snowflakes, its crystals, find my cheek.

I walk the ice-slicked streets, dark, all alone,

I'm hoping and praying for soon, the dawn.

Refrain:

I am a veteran of every war,

fought for freedom on every shore.

No thanks I get, I'm starving now,

Just trying to survive, get by somehow.

I've fought in battles all my life,

Every footstep I take, a cutting knife.

My bones and muscles all do ache,

Keep pushing on, until they break.

Refrain:I am a veteran of every war,

fought for freedom on every shore.

No thanks I get, I'm starving now,

just trying to survive, get by somehow.

Thrown out of every dive, no money now,

On each street corner, I wave and bow,

Holding my sign, and wanting to shout,

Just asking for a hand up, not a handout.

Refrain: I am a veteran of every war,

Fought for freedom on every shore.

No thanks I get, I'm starving now,

just trying to survive, get by somehow.

No mercy I gave, now none I'm shone,

I suppose its fate, that I'm on my own.

Wishing my family knew I'm home,

I'm just crawling through life, all alone.

Refrain: I am a veteran of every war,

fought for freedom on every shore.

No thanks I get, I'm starving now,

just trying to survive, get by somehow.

I am a veteran of every war,

no one cares about me anymore.

Fought for freedom on every shore,

I am a veteran of every war.

Very nice. I feel that in our society we have the need of soldiers to fight our battles but we have never thought of how soldiers fit into our daily lives. I had a few friends that really had a hard time transitioning into the "real world." I also think that government both federal and local sometimes hits the mark. For instance I live in Downtown Reno and they just rebuilt an old home for a veteran. What a great program. Thank you for your songs. I think a little of Pete Seeger when I read them. Jamie

Sad and true. But on a good note we are kicking butt with getting our homeless Vets off the streets and into good places to live and jobs. San Diego sometimes makes me very proud.

      Your refrain hits us hard.

Thanks, Jamie. I saw on the news today that the government is trying to do more for the vets. I just hope it is factual and not hype. Have a blessed day, my friend. whonu

Glad to hear that Eric. We have waited too long and it's past time to help our vets. So glad to hear your good news. Have a blessed day to you and family. whonu

It is sad that veterans who fought for the country to save all its people do not have a comfortable and safe home to welcome them when they are back from the war front.

Nice poetic reminder of veterans everywhere and what they sacrificed for their country.

Salute to the vets, but that's not enough. They need to be cared for in the light of what they have contributed to their country. Your refrain is a very effective plea.

I see so many veterans on the streets panhandling. It just breaks my heart. Without their career choices, we would not be living in the land of the free.

We would like to believe that the new bill signed will actually make a difference. Hope it does. Blessings. whonu
