I Will Stay True To Who I Am--Poem

Updated on August 25, 2012

Sometimes life is funny

Sometimes life is wonderful

And sometimes life hurts so bad we feel as if we cannot go on

The times that hurt the most are the times that define us

The times that prove we are more than we appear

We are so much more than we could ever imagine

In these times of unforeseen and unbelievable consequences

We have a choice to stand tall or to take the easy road

We may yearn to take the path most traveled

The path that leads us to do wrong ;not in the eyes of others

But in our own eyes

In the end when we take our last breath

Do we want to be known as the one

Who could never stand on their own

Or do we want to be remembered as the one

Who stood up for what they believed no matter what

The one who stood strong even when times were tough

The one who spoke of injustice even when people were blind to it

We have a choice in life we can choose to be blind or we can choose to see

We can choose to listen to our hearts and turn away from the crowd

We can choose not to whisper but to yell

We can choose insignificance

We can choose to just be part of the herd

The choice is ours lead or follow

Be silent or have a voice

In my eyes there isn’t even a choice

I will stand on my own two feet

I will speak against any injustice I see

Even the injustice that no one else sees

Even when people hurt in the name of something bigger

Teach hate oh so much hate

And blame it on the fact that they are teaching against a sinner

I will stay true to who I am

And I believe that no one has the right to judge

Unless they can say they have done no wrong

they have no right to preach about who “doesn’t belong”

Even when I see people sleeping in the street

Who would rather buy a bottle than something to eat

I will stay true to who I am

And I believe that these people just need a helping hand

What would I do if I were in there shoes

I would want to forget too

When I see someone hurting, or lost in life

Living with an illness barely able to survive

I will reach out my hand and teach them how to live

I will stay true to who I am

This means I will never fail to offer a helping hand

I will look past what everyone else sees

I will see the real person inside

I will use my voice so that no one feels as if they need to hide

James, Thank you for your kind comment!!

David: I think that you took that line to literally. So many of us in life do not really live life, we merely exist. We lack the confidence to truly experience life. I was actually talking about myself in that line, this poem is about having the confidence to be who you are and not who everyone expects you to be!! Sorry if came across pretentious, that was not my intention.

Very Nice ... bit worried how you come across at the end, better than those you help as if you only now how to live.

..well I really like the lyrical/philosophical style of your writing here - it would be a wonderful song but yet it also reads like a personal manifesto of your inner most thoughts and I always admire people who can stay true to who they are - and you are just one fine example of that - sending you warm wishes and good energy from lake erie time ontario canada 6:59pm

Sometimes we never know who we truly are until the pain sets in. Beautiful Lisa. I love the way you are honest in being who you are inside. For that is where it counts. Beautiful and up.

I like how you mention that the times that hurt the most actually helps us realize that we are stronger. Voted up.
