I Look Upon The Picture Of You With Tired Eyes

Updated on June 5, 2017

The Sweet memories are etched in my mind.
The images of you withstood the test of time.
I look upon the picture of you with tired eyes.
Time cannot erase those nights,
I stayed awake and cried.
I close my eyes and reminisce about the past,
Realizing that you grew up so fast.
You are now grown and have surpassed,
All the expectations in which I had.

Part of the soul begins to dissipate,
Just like time slowly passes away.
My heart is empty of words to say.
No point in trying to run,
What I need is not here anyway.
Life is created –
Never meant to stay.

It was noticed then,
Just like I see it now.
Your eyes full of fear yet,
I saw that you were proud.
Strong enough to fight in a war,
You only knew half about.
Staring at your picture will never ease my pain.
I am afraid even time –
Will hurt me more just the same.

It is all over now.
I know that you are gone,
I will always have that picture of my only son.
Keeping you hidden in my pocket –
Placed safely in my heart.
Having solace in knowing that,
This picture and I will never part.

My Person Thoughts

There was this one picture which touched me in a way; it was hard for me to turn the page. This picture was of a young Northern soldier who had died during the battle of Antietam (Sharpsburg), September 17th, 1862. Since then, there have been several poems in which I wrote about this time period. Some were about battles, and others were about Generals. A part of this particular poem was from way back when, and others have been written now. Now that I have become a Father, that one single picture has never been effaced from my memory.
