If I Could Write a Love Poem

Updated on May 24, 2017
Jodah profile image

John has been writing poetry since his school days. He was awarded "Poet of the Year 2014" Hubby Awards and has had two poems become songs.

How Do I Love Thee..

by Elizabeth Barrett Browning (1806-1861) How do I love thee? Let me count the ways. I love thee to the depth and breadth and height My soul can reach, when feeling out of sight For the ends of Being and ideal Grace. I love thee to the level of everyday's Most quiet need, by sun and candle-light. I love thee freely, as men strive for Right; I love thee purely, as they turn from Praise. I love thee with a passion put to use In my old griefs, and with my childhood's faith. I love thee with a love I seemed to lose With my lost saints, --- I love thee with the breath, Smiles, tears, of all my life! --- and, if God choose, I shall but love thee better after death.

The Great Love Poems

Experiencing the greatest poetry to have ever been written is something I, and many of us, strive for. We want to read something truly great and inspiring that may never be matched again in our lifetime.

There have been many poets throughout history who have tried their hand at writing love poems. ‘Love’ is arguably the most written about subject through both song and poetry. Nevertheless, many of these love poems have been forgotten and are rarely heard or read today. The following are just a few that have been regarded worthy of inclusion among the greatest romantic poems of all time.

Song of Songs (Song of Solomon) the Bible

Considered by some the greatest love song/poem ever written

Sonnet 116 by William Shakespeare

A Shakespearean sonnet cherished for its hopefulness and promise of eternal and unchanging love.

How Do I Love Thee.. by Elizabeth Barret Browning

No description necessary.."let me count the ways"

Love One Another by Kahlil Gibran

This poem, also titled "On Marriage" explains the great bond between two people and the importance of sharing, but also the importance of having time to oneself.

Meeting at Night by Robert Browning

Sometimes we need to jump hurdles to have true love, but in the end, it is worth it. It is said that this poem "must be read aloud" to gain full appreciation of the writing.

Love's Philosophy by Percy Bysshe Shelley

Shelley is masterful in describing love and this is his philosophy for how it should be treated.

Maud by Alfred, Lord Tennyson

A poem about an unnamed lover where the narrator encounters life, death, and the question of life after death.

Annabelle Lee by Edgar Allan Poe

Even the angels are jealous of this love. Poe's last complete poem and arguably one of his best poetry writings.

Bright Star, Would I Were Steadfast as Thou Art by John Keats

Keats wishes to the sky to have his love as constant as the bright stars above.

To His Coy Mistress by Andrew Marvell

Marvell tries to convince a woman to respond to his love and make the most of their passion with the short time they have to live.

Troilus and Criseyde by Geoffrey Chaucer

The tragic retelling of the Siege of Troy. This is considered to be Chaucer's finest work.

The Song of Hiawatha (Hiawatha's Wooing) by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

Hiawatha's forbidden love for Minnehaha, a woman from a different tribe. This is my personal favourite.

These poems are recognized around the world as some of the best love poems ever written. Whether you agree or not is another matter.

(Source: www.poemofquotes.com)

It is an unattainable dream to write a love poem to match any of these great poems. But if I could write a love poem it may go something like this......

If I Could Write a Love Poem

If I could write a love poem

I’d write it just for you.

I’d pull the stars down from the sky

And stick them in with glue.

I’d climb the Himalayas,

Scale Everest’s highest peak.

I’d sail across the oceans

For the treasures that I seek.

If I could write a love poem

I’d rip pieces from my heart

And place them in your open palms

To ensure we never part.

I’d go to war-torn countries

To learn about despair,

So my words would have feelings

That only I could share.

If I could write a love poem

I’d toss pepper in my eyes,

So you could feel my love for you

In every tear I cry.

I’d swim the raging river,

Though the river is too wide.

Like Running Bear to White Dove,

Just to be right by your side.

If I could write a love poem

You’d never put it down,

Because it means that you’re my Queen

And the words would be your crown.

Song Competition Success

Recently I submitted this poem for a competition organised by award winning singer/songwriter Tally Koren. She wanted love poems that she could choose from, selecting one to turn into a song to include on her next album. Below is a copy of the email I received from the Poetry Society:

"POETRY COMPETITION

Last night we had the final event of the Poetry Competition at the Poetry Society.

We are pleased to announce the winners :

The First Prize is –

If I Could Write a Love Poem by John Hansen

The Second Prize

I whisper you by Josh Ekroy

The Third Prize

Love Insidious by Aidan Murch

Poetry Competition with the Theme of Love

International award-winning singer-songwriter Tally Koren is
running a poetry competition as part of the campaign for her
forthcoming album “A Love Song For You”. Tally's first single “Beauty of
the Duty” started as a long poem that was sent to her on My Space
and ended up on the BBC Radio 2 playlist along with 50 other
radio stations. This is your opportunity to have your poem heard by
millions."

Exciting Update 2017

Recently I was contacted by Tally Koren who gave me the exciting news that she would be re-recording my song at Abby Road Studios (made famous by The Beatles) under the title "You Are My Queen."

I think you definitely demonstrate you CAN write a love poem and an awesome one at that. I do disagree about one of the above depictions. While "Annabelle Lee" is an awesome poem by Poe, I think "The Raven" is his masterpiece, but that's just me. I also agree with Frank in that your poem is so lyrical one can hear the tune as she reads. LOVELY!

      Best,

With this lovely and romantic expression of love you have proven that you can most definitely write a love poem. I also love that you listed such a wide range of references. I have to agree with Kim though, while Annabelle Lee is an amazing work, the Raven, in my opinion was Poe's masterpiece...

Only a guy who has real love in her/his heart can talk of learning about despair ! Love is like a diamond so beautiful and shining, attracting everyone toward it, yet so strong and resolute in its content ! John, you are right to keep the love poem secured -exclusively for the beloved, adorning her as a crown. You not only can write love poems but also define love itself in it's very exalted stage, there is no doubt about it. Loved reading such a beautiful poem about love and also enjoyed a wonderful poem written by Elizabeth Barrett. Voted up and shared.

Hi Jodah, you've got a good cadence in your writing. I've never been much for a steady rhyme in my poems. I'm only slightly lyrical and much more imagistic, but I appreciate a good cadence in a poem. You seem to have a natural ability for it and perhaps you've read a lot of the more classic poets. I gained more of my influence from the confessional generation of poets. Anyway, you've got a nice style. I enjoyed it!

    • Jodah profile image
      Author

Thank you maramerce. You are probably right, I was influenced by some of the classic poets, and Dr Seuss :)

Most of my poetry has rhyme and a lyrical touch (I have been told so,e could be put to music), but I have written a few free verse as well. Rhyme comes more naturally.

      Oh my days. This is a wonderful poem , absolutely amazing and so inspiring. In fact;

If I could write a love poem.

I'd write one just for me

So I can act like Juliet

      Feel how love can be.

If I could write a love poem

      Id climb a mountain high

So I can see the world from it

And with it learn to fly.

If I could write a love poem

I would teach my heart to care

And give my love to everyone

      Because I like to share.

If I could write a love poem

I'd write one just like this.

Cos' if I didn't come across your hub

      Its' magic I would miss.

If I could write a love poem

I'd write it to the world

      So my love would blossom

      With each and every word.

If, I , could write a love poem?

      I would name it "oda"

If I could write a love poem?

I would write one just like Jodah.

      Hahha am just having fun.

Well, that's probably the nicest comment I have ever received...and your poetry there fits my poem perfectly. I have done collaborations with other people on short stories, but we could easily have collaborated on this poem. You are a wonderful poet yourself Leptirela. This was a huge compliment and thank you, also for the vote up. A soon as I have a chance I will be checking your other hubs to. Glad I found you in the forum.

This is beautiful and I equally loved Leptirela's response. Definitely voted up. I wish to write such lovely poems in the near future...a hobby I had tossed.

I can't believe this hub is no longer featured due to low traffic. It is one of my best. Things are getting crazy. Not much choice but to reshare it. Every time I check my accounts page more of my hubs have been un-featured so I'm having to spend all my time updating rather than write new hubs. Getting a little frustrating.

      Awwwwww- Jodah!! Sweet Jodah!

Did you read this to Kathy? I am sure she would have loved it.

Coming back to the poem – There’s so much depth in this poem. Say if a man would read this poem to his lady, she would embrace him endearingly and she would make every damn effort to pick thorns from his lover’s path. She would get hurt herself, but she would never cause him discomfort.

Your understanding of Love; of lovers, is profound. You have seen all the tides in love, and you know how to express your words with passion and care.

‘If I could write a love poem

I’d toss pepper in my eyes,

So you could feel my love for you

In every tear I cry’ – Jodah

I am speechless. My eyes… oh... they are teary.

Jodah, it shows that you are well read about Romance. So I would encourage you to write Romantic fictions or Romantic poems, and just keep on captivating your readers. Much love…much, my Dearest Jodah. You have won my Heart! I am now a fan of yours (he he). Bless you.

What can I say after reading such a captivating and generous comment as this Surabhi? I don't mean to encourage you to read my hubs, but I feel that you and some newer followers may enjoy some of my earlier hubs that they are not aware of. I hoped this may appeal to you. Thank you.

Very well done. I totally enjoyed your poem. Your romantic feelings come through as one reads it. You also had a nice introduction with the comparison of great romantic poets.

I also caught the part about winning first place for possibly being made into a song by Tally Koren. Congratulations. I can see how it can be used in that way. You wrote it in such a way that's conducive to being song lyrics too. That's very creative!

Thank you for reading this Glenn. Yes, it has been made into a song and is part of Tally's latest album. She actually Skyped me from the Poetry Society Awards, London when the poem was selected as winner of the competition. I did have the link to her sound clip singing the song but it is no longer available. She is currently trying to get it selected as part of a soundtrack for a movie. I appreciate your kind comment.

John, If by any chance Tally has the song on YouTube you can include that in a YouTube capsule in your hub. If not, ask her for permission to upload the sound clip to YouTube. I see videos that are only audio with the album cover displayed.

As for the movie, that sounds great! I hope you retained movie rights so you get revenue from that.

Glenn, the song was online on Soundcloud and I used to have the link here, but I see it is no longer there so removed the link. I will have to contact Tally and find out what is happening. It doesn't seem to be on YouTube either.

Great job! John, I just found the song on Soundcloud and listened to it, so it's there now! I couldn't find it on youtube, though. How neat that your poem was chosen for a song!

Thank you for that Victoria. It was in Soundcloud previously, then seemed to have been removed. Glad it's back so I can re-ad the link.
