If You Leave: A Poem

Updated on April 19, 2013
Source

If you leave,

Paint all the sunsets with the color of my eyes,

So you won't forget me when you gaze upon the sky,

If you leave,

Don't let the ocean wipe away my footprint,

So you'll be left with a memory, a melancholy hint,

If you leave,

May the tears you cry be sweetened with delight,

Mingled with healing, making your stoic eyes bright.

If you leave,

Carry on with quiet independence,

Knowing that what once was wasn't intended.

If you leave,

Keep me close in your soul,

Just return my fragile heart you swiftly stole.

Awesome poem, Ebower! There's not a dry eye in the audience by the end, I'm sure. What a grown-up way of leave-taking: giving the person permission to leave and still remember the good you had together without pain, while getting your own heart back so that you can do the same. A+ in my grade book! Thanks for sharing such an intimate-sounding poem.
