A Poem for Christmas: Loving This Time Of The Year

By Jocelyn Pagaran Cadiz-Oclarit © 2014

Loving this time of the year
When most that I see are with good cheer
Setting aside sadness within
To be one in celebrating Christ’s coming

Loving this time of the year
Witnessing reconciliations
Long lost friendships found again
For the magic that this season brings

Loving this time of the year
As families are reunited
With love overwhelming
Looking past at mistakes done to each other

Loving this time of the year
When thoughtfulness can be felt everywhere
Despite pressing concerns
The spirit of giving overflows

Do you know the Christmas Traditions in the Philippines?

Christmas season is one of the longest and most important religious celebrations in the Philippines. Significant traditions can be observed. Let me count the ways...

  • Christmas spirit can be felt as early as September. You can already hear Christmas songs played on the radio and media players in the neighborhood. Christmas performances and contests can already be seen on television. Christmas decorations can be seen in Filipino homes.
  • The Christmas celebration started with the "Simbang Gabi" or the so-called Misa de Gallo/Dawn Mass for nine days beginning on the 16th of December. Majority of the Filipino families attend mass in the churches or chapels near to their residences.
  • The Noche Buena is basically a family gathering done on Christmas eve which is open to friends, relatives and neighbors with the presence of a variety of food delicacies on the table. The opening of Christmas gifts received by family members is done at this time.
  • The "Belen" or the so-called Nativity Scene is usually the highlight in the decorations set for Christmas in Filipino homes.
  • The presence of the "Parol" or the Christmas Lantern decorations can be seen hung around, anywhere you go. From the Filipino houses, to the busy streets, tourists spots and business establishments.
  • Christmas trees on variety from the smallest to the biggest in sizes can be seen as one of the decoration set in Filipino homes and even in department stores, offices and parks.
  • Christmas carolling is another tradition I personally enjoyed when I was young. Usually, children roam around the neighborhood singing Christmas songs to each and every houses. In return, the family being caroled would give them presents in the form of candies, biscuits or money. Group of adolescents and adults do carolling also for a cause.
  • The "Manito, Manita" or Kris Kringle is still so alive especially in the academic institutions and workplaces. This is simply the exchange of gifts depending on how much the amount agreed upon.
  • On Christmas Day itself, parents accompany their little kids in visiting their godparents. Children bless the hand of their godparents and a gift may be received.
