if I were

Updated on January 24, 2013

I wanted to tell you

how you are everything to me

and how much you mean

but I was afraid

I'd sound too shallow

if I told you the truth

afraid you'd think me needy

if I poured out every shade of red in my body

I love you

I just wish I could...

if only you could see through my eyes

and feel my heart

how it beats so strong

when I'm with you

you would see my dreams

in the secret places I hide my screams

in the darkness you would find a light

and you would follow it

to a burning fire
and upon the fireplace mantle

a key
with your name on it

it would be solid gold

and shining so bright

it is the light

in the darkness

that will guide you through the caverns of my heart

I just wanted to tell you

I love you

the vision was so clear

but the words dropped in shadow

if only I were a writer...

like Shakespeare

I could re-write Romeo and Juliet

to a prince and a princess

that lived happily ever after

we would leave scented trails that no one could ignore

and our home

would be wherever we are

we wouldn't need blankets for the cold night

I would hold you so tight

my body would become a flame

and your shivering would be no more

if I were a rock star singer

maybe then I could utter those words

or sing them
in a ballad

I'd call it, 'Your kiss'
it would begin with a piano
then a violin string

playing so slow
like your wet pink tongue
soft and long
an acoustic guitar would strum to your lips
your breath would play drums
our hearts would play bass
your teeth would nibble my ear
while your hands find my hair
the lyrics would float in the air
like incense
I would ingest your essence
your scent and fragrance

if I were a philosopher

I would question the existence of God

and on one shoulder

dusty red in color

would be a little angel

two horns like the devil

and it would flash pictures

bombs

war

death

starvation and gluttony

skeletons that have not yet died

would cry

why ?

and then a white dove would peck me on the cheek

and show me a still memory

of you and me

and I would believe again

I would shout your name from the housetops

I would turn your teardrops into wine

if only I could tell you how much you really mean to me

I wouldn't be thinking all these silly things

if I were a psychiatrist

I'd ask myself some questions

like, "Why can't you say those words?

You graduated high school,

it should be no problem for you.

Rejection?

Is that it?

Afraid that your love won't be reciprocated?

now

Tell me about your past lovers.

Tell me about your mother.

A bit neurotic?

and your father?

pause for effect

Was he always there when you needed him?

How does that make you feel?

Sorry,

our time is up"

but I am none of these things

I am a poet

that just wanted to capture your attention

for just a moment

there are no nets or mason jars here

you're free to go

and do as you wish

after reading this

but I am a poet

and so I must stay here

and linger

for just a little bit

longer

....wow Sir Eric - I am learning from you and constantly inspired too - this is epic, poetic heart on your sleeve writing - soulful, passionate and urgent - I will link, share and post this beautiful piece of writing to the Music and Writing FB group - currently listening to vintage Allman Brothers loud - at Colin's rock and roll cafe with a London Porter dark ale - and letting my hair down, so to speak.

So glad I found - now we need more people to find you - I'm trying buddy, I'm trying - and sending warm wishes and good energy to you from lake erie time canada 10:38pm and much of my writing is influenced by songwriters and music like Tom Waits, Warren Zevon, Nick Cave, Leonard Cohen, Ray Davis of the Kinks and Kate Bush and the Gerswhins, Townes Van Zandt and Billie Joe Shaver

Just my opinion; a poet is a singer in words. Thank you for the waltz.
