Illusions - senses vs Reality in senryu

Updated on February 14, 2012

Illusions are the result of wrongly perceived and/ or distorted interpretation of a sensory stimuli. The most common being visual illusions. Mirages are common for dessert travelers, because that is what the mind longs to see, water in the desert. A mirage is defined as 'an image formed under certain atmospheric conditions, in which objects appear to be reflected or displaced or in which nonexistent objects seem to appear.' Neurology and psychiatry would often list tactile and auditory illusions as symptoms of of several of diseases. The most common kind of illusion is the distortion of perception that arises when there is a gap between what is seen or heard and what is real or meant. When a person loses a limb in accident or it has been surgically removed for medical reasons the person often feels that his limb is still attached to the body, a condition called the phantom limb. These people would often complain of pain in those limbs that they have lost, which illustrates how real illusions can be to the person having them. The distortion of thought and the refusal of the mind to accept the reality as a truth causes many an illusion. Grief also has this component of illusion attached to it. Usually when a person is in mourning he/she often refuses to accept the fact that his or her loved one has passed on. This denial often causes them to feel the presence of the loved one so close to them. This is more real than the present reality. This is the power of the mind, what the mind believes in is more true than reality itself. I saw a painting recently andI got thinking about how illusions work, from this was born these senryu's on Illusion.. read on..

Beautiful illusion

Illusions in senryu

Nebulous fusion,
Mist deftly concealing,
The harshness behind!

False perception ,
Fantasy animated,
Non existent visions!

Fleeting promises.
Winsome invitations.
Leading to the brink!

Vanishing reality,
Imperfect and covert facts,
Evaporated hope!

Swift deception,
Eyes belie intellect,
Great disappointment!

Enthralling scenes,
Almost real, unreachable,
Vacant emptiness!
