In Lack of Defense

Updated on January 29, 2016
Source

Daddy hurt me, Mommy, and I tell you now

Male ego is wanton, and karma will not endow

Trust and a future of excuses and lack of reason

Time is of the essence in any life or season.

His power is lost to those who have strength

Even though Southern values will go to any length

To preserve his destruction and sullen critique

As his backhand is strong due to muscular physique.

Raised in an old fashioned and headstrong sense,

Used to coverups, and brainwashing is a sad consequence.

That little girl who relied on right over might

Cannot fully understand her life, now contrite.

Yet she will stand by any man wrong or right

Without even realizing her own shallow plight.

She just cannot see that her life, cast with doubt

Sooner or later will bite her in life throughout.

Sell your sad loyalty to the highest bidder

But think hard and fast before you consider

What impact it has on an innocent party

Don’t sell your soul for a righteous cup of coffee.

Lie awake nights and play over what you’ve done

And remember your own devils can’t be outrun.

So think twice before you strike, hold your tongue

Don’t sell anyone out just to belong.

Just because mother did what you could see

Don’t become her as a self-appointee.

Yes, stand by your man for the right reasons

Not for the sake of betrayal or impudent treason.

Friends will see through your imminent ruse

And cast you aside without any clues.

So hear me now, and do take offense

For your own fiery ways in lack of defense.

A powerful message that far too many of us can relate to. Abuse is the worst and affects the abused for the rest of their life. Well done!

Wow, Deb, your poetry is phenomenal and packs a powerful punch! Bravo for bringing awareness to such blatant brutality and evil arrogance. We need to scream to the top of the world when this happens. Sharing everywhere

Exactly, Lawrence. If we cannot be loyal to ourselves and our families, can we be loyal tom anyone else? It is interesting to think about it, eh?

Hey, Mary! Sometimes the human condition is caused by humanity itself. Let's see if we can keep people from hurting each other.

I don't think I can 'take offence' despite the encouragement to in the last verse! But I will ponder the wisdom here.

Loved this poem, but then I've always struggled with those who lack loyalty and this seems to encourage us to be loyal to ourselves and those we hold dear!

      Awesome

I'll never understand people who wrong others and tell them not to tell. That in itself screams "this is wrong!" The bruised souls turn bitter and become broken, never to mend entirely. The haunting never stops.

Dora, I appreciate your input. Not only does this start in families, but it spreads to other segments of life in adulthood, after the damage is already done. Then it creates even more damage. The human condition is truly at odds with itself.

Couldn't be more timely. "Coverups, and brainwashing" are still the order in in many families. They needs to be replaced with the right teaching, "Don’t sell anyone out just to belong." Good job!

An easy-to-read poem, with pulse-pounding cadence and a strong, self-assuring message that does not dice words up to enshroud their unified importance. A critique of granting loyalty to those that do not deserve it, but showing love to those that do.

'For your own fiery ways in lack of defense' is a splendid line, full of fire,

      -E.G.A.
