Inevitable- a poem

Updated on October 27, 2013

Inevitable is the breaking of a heart,

the refuse of love lost, the first and most poignant failure.

How broken we become, how shattered our hopes,

abandonment the cold hard truth of being alone.

I fear that look in my children’s eyes, when they face this reality,

devastation that lays waste to the naive, emerging soul.

So young and prone to love their hearts open,

their experience overwhelming and complete.

How do we impart the nature of love, that loss is part of life,

the irrefutable process of surrender innately human?

How do we assure survival, that pain will pass

and that love will arise once more to deliver them?

Inevitable is the swell of emotion that defines us,

gives us that commitment to our existence.

How difficult to resist the cynicism that loss instils,

the fear that experience can recur, unwanted.

Innocence is so beguiling, its nature long lost to the experienced,

and so underestimated by the initiate.

How do we explain that to our children,

who want to grow up so quickly into an unforgiving world?

I think every parent goes through this fear for their children but truth is that this is just one of those experiences that an idividual has to live through and grow from. :)
