Inspirational Mondays, Quotes from the Book of Proverbs

Updated on May 21, 2012

A proverb is a wise saying or short phrase used to describe a basic truth. It often uses phrases of imagery familiar imagery to convey its message. We find that old proverbs can be useful in providing inspiration to our daily lives. There is no proverbs like the book of Proverbs that come from the Bible. There is wisdom, direction, and inspiration found in this book. Many of the teachings have a way of making their readers think about their own lives. Here are 30 of my favorite proverbs from the Bible; one for each day.

Wealth

Proverbs 23:4 Do not wear yourself out to get rich; do not trust your own cleverness. – Being a workaholic is not good for the person that is working a lot, nor is it good for the family. Sometimes in life, people have a tendency to take themselves seriously. Take the time to enjoy your journey to riches.

10:4 Lazy hands make for poverty, but diligent hands bring wealth.- There is no time for procrastination. Procrastination is another word for laziness. If someone wishes to have success, then they will have to be willing to work, otherwise they will continue to be in the state that they are in. This can be taught to the younger generation that believes everything will be handed to them easily.

11:25 A generous person will prosper; whoever refreshes others will be refreshed.- It is always better to give than to receive.

18:10 It is not fitting for a fool to live in luxury—how much worse for a slave to rule over princes!

22:7 The rich rule over the poor, and the borrower is slave to the lender.

Being Wise

13:20 Walk with the wise and become wise, for a companion of fools suffers harm. – As the old saying goes, “you are the company you keep.” If you are aspiring to gain more knowledge or have more out of life, you have to be with people that have the same aspirations. Being wise can preserve you from harm and danger. It can help you make the right decisions because with wisdom comes good judgement and discretion.

2:11 Discretion will protect you, and understanding will guard you. – Never reveal too much about yourself or someone else. Being discrete has its advantages. You will be seen as trustworthy.

3:13 Blessed are those who find wisdom, those who gain understanding,

3:21 My son, do not let wisdom and understanding out of your sight, preserve sound judgment and discretion;

5:6-7 Go to the ant, you sluggard;consider its ways and be wise! It has no commander, no overseer or ruler, yet it stores its provisions in summerand gathers its food at harvest. – It is always good to know what season you are in. There are times when you should gather and save. Then there are other times to spend or reap the harvest. Even in the economy we are living in at the moment, it is always important to understand frugal living. It will help you to survive during times of plenty and famine.

9:8 Do not rebuke mockers or they will hate you; rebuke the wise and they will love you.

Marriage

12:4 A wife of noble character is her husband’s crown, but a disgraceful wife is like decay in his bones.- Husbands and wives are reflections of each other. My husband says when I look good then he looks good; and vice versa. It is always important to me that my husband is not found embarrassed by my actions whether it is a wrong attitude or anything that would bring shame.

6:32;34 But a man who commits adultery has no sense; whoever does so destroys himself. For jealousy arouses a husband’s fury, and he will show no mercy when he takes revenge. - Be aware of the jealousy that comes from sleeping with someone elses spouse. There is a likelihood of violence when infidelity is found.

Integrity and Humility

10:9 Whoever walks in integrity walks securely, but whoever takes crooked paths will be found out.- Those that are honest and that have integrity can be confident because there is nothing to hide. On the other hand, the dishonesty of certain individuals will always be revealed.

11:2 When pride comes, then comes disgrace, but with humility comes wisdom.- Have you ever seen someone that was so prideful and arrogant that it offended you? Those that are very prideful will be seen as a disgrace in the eyes of others. It takes wisdom to know how to be humble. Being humble goes against the ego in our humanity.

Gossip and Your Words

11:13 A gossip betrays a confidence, but a trustworthy person keeps a secret.- My mom always said that if you don’t want your secret to get out, then don’t tell anyone. Well, there are times when secrets have to be told; and you need a trusted friend to keep your secret. Wisdom says to never tell your secret to people that gossip, or to those that talk too much. In their conversation, they can inadvertently reveal your secrets.

4:24 Keep your mouth free of perversity;keep corrupt talk far from your lips.

4:23 Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it. – Some people just have the gift of gab. I am not one of those people. I understand how to choose my words; make them few, while not revealing everything. The last time I revealed all that was in my heart I ended up being taken advantage of. My advice, keep everything to yourself and only reveal what you have to.

17:21The tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruit.- Words do have power therefore it is important to choose them wisely.

16:24 Gracious words are a honeycomb, sweet to the soul and healing to the bones.

19:25 It is a trap to dedicate something rashly and only later to consider one’s vows.-It is always better to keep your word. Making a promise in haste, then breaking the promise will cause distrust. Choose your words and promises wisely.

Violence and Anger

3:31 Do not envy the violent or choose any of their ways.- There is an old cliché that says “violence begets violence.” When people grow up in a violent environment they are more likely to choose violence as their way of living. But, at the end of violence is destruction.

15:1 A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.- I learned this as a young girl. I would get into fights quite. I would respond off someone’s anger and become angry myself. If you are in a situation where someone is lashing out in words of anger, the best way to dismantle their anger is to speak back in a low voice. Then, get away from them fast.

14:17 A quick-tempered person does foolish things, and the one who devises evil schemes is hated.

Happiness

14:30 A heart at peace gives life to the body, but envy rots the bones. – Laughter is like medicine. It can make you feel better when you are depressed. The best remedy for the blues is an old comedy movie and a bucket of popcorn. It works every time.

15:13 A happy heart makes the face cheerful, but heartache crushes the spirit.

Self-Control

16:32 Better a patient person than a warrior, one with self-control than one who takes a city.- A warrior can be brave, strong, and quick on their feet. But, those that have self-control can strategize their next move effectively.

Raising Children

17:6 Children’s children are a crown to the aged, and parents are the pride of their children.- Grandchildren are the apple of their grandparents eye. For some, it is another chance to parent a child in the right direction. For others, being a grandparent means doing all the things they couldn't do for their children. It is a treasured time, full of proud moments for the parents and grandparent.

22:6 Start children off on the way they should go,and even when they are old they will not turn from it.

Friendship

17:17 A friend loves at all times and a brother is born for a time of adversity. - A true friend will always love you no matter what you do. Sometimes those friends are parents, mentors, or spouses.
