Is it Just Me? Or the World has Lost Common Sense
Lately, I am beginning to think I am the only person left with any common sense. Or is it just me? Am I the odd ball?
- Sept. 2017
I am an amateur writer who writes for fun. I write on all topics to amuse and to communicate and to share knowledge. I am very passionate about certain things that matter to me. In recent years, I noticed a shift in the public discourse. It seems everything is colored with a political bent and sometimes common sense is just lacking.
In the world of political correctness, some controversial topics just can't seem to see the light of day. I just don't comprehend this. Is is not better to discuss dfferences of opinion rather than keeping them bottled up. How else can we as a group improve and progress when some topics are off limits?
Who is to Blame?
I try to analyse the current situation and determine who is to blamed for this condition. The answer I came up with is the "media". They have created this atmosphere of distrust among the common people about government and all avenues of our society.
It used to be the newspapers and the nightly news on TV was our source of the news. They were given this priviledge by our Constitution to be the watchdog of our government and the people we elect to govern. The First Amendment guarentees the freedom of speech so that all opinions however unpopular can be heard and discussed freely. That is how a democracy suppose to work.
What happened? In my opinion, in recent years, the media has shirk their responsibility and became partisan in an unprecedented way. They began to use their power to shade the truth, spin the news and at times even create "fake news" or exaggerate the events to give advantage to one political party over another. In the process, they have damaged themselves as the gate keeper. When an organization looses its integrity, they have lost everything. In recent years, with the advent of the internet and talk radio, there are many more options for the people to get their news. There is no longer a monopoly by the Main street media.
There is also great danger. When a profession is no longer standardized, you run the possibility of corruption and yellow journalism. The media cannot be trusted anymore. The standards of journalism of checking sources, and getting verification and asking the basic questions of who, what, when, where, why and how does not seem to exist.
What can be expected as a result? For one, the people are not being informed. The mis-information is prevslent and every where. Who can be trusted with providing the truth? The people are left to themselves to discern the truth from all the garbage.
This is the result and not the cause. Perhaps, it is happening by design. The people with the real power behind the scenes, is doing exactly what they intended - to confuse and to distract.
The goal is to keep the people from the true nature of what they are plotting. This is not new. By dividing the public on various categories, race, sex, and economic ststus...they keep their power and let the people be distracted and fight among themselves.
You have to wonder how long can they keep this up? When will the people finally wake up and see the light.
How is it that election after elections, when either parties are put in power, Democrats or Republicans, nothing seem to change? The politicians talk a good game but deliver very little once elected. In fact, sometimes, they do the exact opposite of what they ran on.
Is it Just Me?
Some recent events has shaken my confidence in the wisdom of the people. Our democracy is only as strong as the will of the people and the integrity of the government we elect. When that system breaks down, bad things will happen.
The recent events in Charlottesville VA is a case in point. How can this happen? Who failed us that lead to the tragic death of this young girl? Where were the police who are sworn to oath to serve and protect? What about the judge who allowed this protest to happen at that park, over the objection of the local police chief? What about the ACLU who represented the White supremist group in court and fought for their right to protest? What about the Antifa group that showed up with battle gear and masks ready to fight...? And what about the mayor who told the police to stand down? Where are the adults with common sense?
Why did the media gave this event so much coverage and publicity? The small hate groups in this country that exists and will always exist are small and tiny in number. They are the fringe of the fringe. Why give them the voice they don't deserve? What is the ulterior motive of the media?
What Was This About Anyway?
The removal of a statue of Confederate General Robert E. Lee. Was this so important that it needed national coverage? How many statues like this exist all over the country? Are we to cover this everytime it happened?
More importantly, who is being offended by this? And who gets to decide the next one to be removed? How far back should we go into our history? What about Jefferson and Washington? They were slave owners. How about Christopher Columbus?
It is not just statues. There are buildings and street names and plaques and schools and all kinds of artifacts...Should we go back and erase our history?
Common sense tells me that it is impractical to do this. The cost and turmoil that it would cost is not worth the effort.
Why is this news?
It seems to me that the world has turned up side down In some respect. From the politicians to the media to the police and the people being stirred up. Am I the only one who see this for what it is? Where are the people with some common sense?
Let's have a true genuine discussion about race relations in this country and leave history alone for historians and educators. They can explain these events in proper context.
