Is my best not good enough?

Updated on June 27, 2014

Is my best not good enough?

Even though I was born in the ghetto

with remnants of a broken race on my face.

Inside of a broken home, surrounded by a war zone.

Deprived victim of circumstance, doing the best that I can,

fighting to survive when I never had a chance.

Is my best not good enough?

Watching my friends and family members become casualties

graphically, only knowing death by one name,

tragedy.

Enough to make a man go insane?

(maintain)

Is my best not good enough?

No Ph.D or Masters degree

but a G.E.D at the age of twenty three.

How could my mother still be proud of me?

Is it because she is my mother?

It could be.

Or is it because where I'm from,

its an accomplishment to reach the age of twenty one?

Is my best not good enough or is my best yet to come?

Daunte- Over-coming the adversity, is what defines you as a man. Gaining titles and climbing the ladder of success without passion for what you're doing doesn't. My father once told me I was a failure because i dropped out of college and became a truck driver. I responded we simply measured success in different terms. I explained my life will have been successful, if it is standing room only at my funeral, not if I have a huge savings account. You have been blessed with the gift of beng able to exspose your inner most thoughts and feelings. Explore that and share with the world your gift and talent. You will see you are more than just good enough. -Paul

I had to pause after reading the first stanza. I've been reading a lot about child abuse over recent weeks and your poem triggered a lot of stuff I had been reading about.

As for not having letters after your name, if you never get them, don't berate yourself. I don't have any letters have my name either but I have more work and life experience than some people with a long list of letters after their names.

Plarson is right; success is determined in different ways by many people. Be proud of yourself because you have beat the odds, Daunte, and I can see you climbing to even greater heights.
