Island I return - free verse 2

Updated on February 21, 2014

So this is it huh
gazing out amongst the ruins
the fences need repair
or tearing down
the old house needs to be
opened again
I return

It's easy to get bogged down
of all that I need to do
peeling paint
the water pump from
the well
the shutters pulled away
to hell with it right

I gaze out along and across the bay to
the mainland and all
that it held for me
for me
It's just as well though that
this great divide
isn't but the sea alone
it is what it is

The rusty locks hardly move
this salty air
the silent mists are hard
even on hardware
bringing back memories
of my father and his oilcans
our family home

I turn and watch the old
converted lobster boat plow
its way through waves
and wonder aloud
"any regrets "?
And in response I think
of all I'm giving up
and getting too
"no......none at all"

Any island in the sun or fog would be as rich as the words you use to describe it. Your life and your verse is as free as it need be. Great piece Ed.

Your rambling thoughts, so real. I often take a look back and remember a time when my siblings were all alive and we were close, my mother and sister Bea and Virgie, how i miss them today. I have a few regrets but only a few. I love it when you take a walk down memory lane. Thank you..

Great imagery in this poem. I enjoy returning to places of my childhood and reliving the memories. Well done. Voted up.
