It Has Been A Long Day

Updated on October 5, 2015

I have spoken many words
But today I cannot find them
Where have you hidden my words?
And why have you stolen my heart?
I have been told that there is a past, present, and a future
But it is just another lie
There is only one day
I woke up this morning and it was today

Today I saw the lifeless body of a young girl in Syria
Covered with dust amidst the rubble
Today I saw the bodies of more children
Like rag dolls ripped apart and bleeding in Palestine

Today I saw the Lakota
Men, women, and children slaughtered by the 7th Calvary of the United States
Today I went to Sand Creek
It is there that I saw U.S. Army Colonel John Chivington and the Colorado
Territory Militia rape.mutilate, and murder the Cheyenne and the Arapaho

Today I stood on a street corner in Ferguson Missouri and watched a young
black man being murdered by a cop
Just minutes later, I saw the same thing in Ohio,New York, Baltimore, and
South Carolina
Did I mention Samantha Ramsey?

Today I saw Thomas Jefferson molest and rape the slave girl Sally Hemings
Today I saw a very Strange Fruit
But I was afraid to pick it
Shortly thereafter, I met a dreamer who checked out in Memphis
Today I heard a man say he was building a wall
After killing us all

I have spoken many words
But today I cannot find them
Where have you hidden my words?
And why have you stolen my heart?

I woke up this morning and it was today
It has been a long day
I am tired and only wish to sleep

It HAS been a long day. We are a pivotal point in history. Do we choose compassion or reject it like the past? Do not sleep Ronnie! The poet must keep up the fight. I like the technique that you used here to cover so much of how the world has become what it is.
