It's a Long Song

Updated on October 10, 2012

The first time I saw her she was lying in another man’s bed
She wanted something but her boyfriend ignored her instead
I asked him, “Who’s that chick there in the corner?”
He said, “She’s my girl but she’s soon to be a goner”

A few years passed and then I saw her again
She was dating another guy who had become my friend
We started partying together and stayed up all night
One day he said, “She’s ready for us so come on over tonight”

We were driving around town in her fancy convertible
Her daddy was rich so that kind of made her a desirable
He said, “She likes you man and thinks you’re fun to be around”
I said, “Yeah, I like to come over, I guess I’m just ya’lls clown”

He said, “You don’t understand, I’m sayin' she’s pretty wild”
I said, “So are you, so it looks like she’s just your style”
“Man, she wants us to get together, do I have to spell it out?”
I was floored and said, “I don’t know what this is all about”

I told him, “Man that’s your girl and I see nothing but regret”
He said, “Don’t worry, it’s just one time then we’ll all just forget”
I knew it was a mistake and hoped he’d tell her I wasn’t game
But one night it happened and things were never the same

She started calling me and coming over on the side
I didn’t want to do it but I was young so I kept taking the ride
One night at a party she said, “He knows everything, you better go”
He called and said, “We’re comin’ over to end your little show”

I waited until I heard them coming up the staircase
I decided I would let them in and he started gettin’ in my face
She whispered to me, “He has a gun in the glove compartment”
I couldn’t think straight knowing I might die in this apartment

The desire for sex was gonna’ make me die in vain
It wasn't fear as much as the thought of my mother's pain
Finally she came over and whispered in my ear
“I’m leaving with him but we’ll be together in a year”

He glared at me and left with the girl I loved every day
I was alive but had to live knowing he would have his way
I spent all night on the loop just drivin' and cryin’
I wanted to live two hours earlier but now I was dyin’

I'd never known the pain of your girl loving another man
I wanted to throw up because it was so hard to understand
It took some time but I realized she did what she had to do
It was either die or just pend the next few months feeling blue

I saw her one time in the school parking lot
She smiled at me but my heart felt like it’d been shot
I kept walking while she stood and called out my name
I didn’t say nothin’ but was feelin’ strong just the same

You know this story almost didn't have an end
She and I got together and we all confronted again
It’s been forever now and we all finally moved on
Maybe I’ll tell you more but it’s such a long song
