Jesus and Mama
By: Wayne Brown
Just a head strong kid in my growing up
Listened to likes of no one; a stubborn pup
That stubbornness would never let me see
That Jesus and Mama always loved me
A gravel road to a winding two-lane highway
Thumb in the wind to get a ride goin’ my way
Strong, harsh words screamed out as I flee
Never caring that Jesus and Mama loved me
Mama said she’d leave a light on the window sill
Said if I came back it would be God’s will
Told me that one day I would wake up and see
Just how much Mama and Jesus really love me
I hit the town, kicked the lights; I was on a roll
The devil was in my heart; he owned my soul
I cared about nothing; just wanted to be free
No clue how much Jesus and Mama loved me
Spending my money like it grew on tree limbs
Taking on water faster that I could swim
A third time under and I still could not see
How much Jesus and Mama always loved me
Some really fast women; they came and went
Before they left they spent my last red cent
And as broke as I was, I still refused to see
How much Jesus and Mama always loved me
Soon the bottle became my one and only friend
I went down bad roads and came by up again
Sleeping in alleys cause I had no where to be
Even though Jesus and Mama always loved me
I hit hark rock bottom; I fell there head first
As bad as life was it got worse and worse
I looked for redemption but still didn’t see
That Jesus and Mama had always love me
A cold ol’ back alley; a voice from the dark
Told me to go to the church by the park
I walked into the chapel and fell upon a knee
Realizing Jesus and Mama indeed did love me
Here on the gravel road nursing my foolish pride
Lamp is still on in the window; Mama’s inside
God found my heart and let the blind see
How much Jesus and Mama always love me
