"Jose" by Eric Wayne Flynn

Updated on April 8, 2014

Pick up @ 5:30

Jose Alvarez

Headed to where they house Phoenix's

God's habitual children

Or Dominicans down on their luck

Missing a foot and one leg

Collateral damage from a 28 year vacation from his homeland

Lost due to the coldest winter I can recall

I felt it's sting, Jose went numb

Transported and delivered

To a half assed halfway house Harrington Hall

Circling with Jose we found it

Under construction

One more obstacle before he enters Shangri-La

Fenced in, crumbling at the site

Our uphill battle, complete with falling rocks

Jose's last hope of a good nights sleep

We are gonna make it buddy

I put Jose's bags on my shoulder, in my teeth and around my neck

I feel his noose rubbing, burning my skin down to the bone

Just a few more feet Jose and you're home

Wheeling our way through Harrington Hall

Lined with beds that are bunked

Mattresses with funk

Black and white prisoners societies skunks

On a grey day with just a crack of sun

The hall has one bed glowing warm near a window

I make sure Jose's bags are under his cot

A green duffle, a cane, his chair and his balls are all Jose's got

Left to him in his will

The same one he folded into a boat and set sail for salvation in

Finding a fight with a Tiger with red, white and blue stripes

The animal that bit off his foot and leg

I shake Jose's hand and say "Have a good one"

A good life? A good meal? A good day? A good shit?

We can do better than this

I whisper, shaking my head

Making my escape

Running to find something beautiful outside

Weaving through the mess we've made

Hidden in Harrington Hall

Good luck to us all
