Joy, my Gentle Friend

How transient the joys in life,

appearing and fading in shortness of time.

I wish I could maintain them,

live within their rice paper walls.


So fleeting they are and how addictive their seduction,

lost within their rapture I cling in desperation,

for fear of forgetting their existence,

the possibility of experience.


Why do I cling so vehemently?

Is it the fear of pain and misery,

that I revere joy with abandon,

wollow within its gentle folds.


In a world of hurt, each joy is an event,

a sacred exchange of view.

When joy escapes the mundane physical reality,

it soars to unexpected heights.


Joy is the task of gentle men,

intent on living life in serenity, not contention.

I search you out, my fleeting friend,

committed to your ideals.
