"Joy of The Heart" By Rolly A. Chabot

Welcome

The Fireside is fire less tonight. It would take a man without very much common sense to invite his fellow hub friends into this heat and add to it with a fire. In any case I want you to close your eyes and think you hear one snapping in the background.

Some of you may know that I have ventured from the rolling hills of Alberta to the Gulf Islands here on the West Coast of Canada. This Island is called Galiano. It is a community of people that have managed to hold off logging other industry and have done and excellent job of maintaining a very laid back lifestyle. A place where everyone takes the time to say hello. It is a place I have fallen in love with and who know I may be one of these Islanders some day.

The first thing I noticed is the Island is void of any garbage. You know the kind we see all over the cities. Instead you see people bending over and picking up anything laying around. The Island is approximately 24 miles long and 6 miles at the widest point. There are many access points for the public to venture out onto vantage points of their liking. Rocky shorelines or beaches. The Pacific Ocean is crystal clear here and I have been told it is one of the best Salmon fishing and whale watching areas of the region.

For those who know me and my love of nature this would be paradise. There is a place up the road from here that has caught my eye and I will be doing some research on it. Who knows it may be something to think about. All I know is I feel very comfortable here. I have attached a picture to the right. No matter where it is you are all more than welcome to the Fireside.

What Makes us Happy

I often think back of the good times and yes even the harder times in life and often ask myself what really makes us happy. I look at the way we live here in North America and I shudder thinking of those in the world who are living in complete and utter poverty. I question myself when I consider looking at a property here when I could use those same resources to bless others. Should I feel guilty for wanting something like this for the later years in life. Some would say yes and some would say just go for what makes you happy.

I have always been one to be generous with money or my time. It has been always given freely when it is there to give. I have been on the other end of the scale as well and received when I have been in need. I recall once being without any food other than rice and oatmeal porridge for weeks on end and yet I never asked. I gave of my time helping a friend build his new house. When he reached out to help I said I was fine. It was the old pride thing taking place in me. The only thing I accepted was a few dozen eggs over the period of the summer I helped him out of the kindness of my heart. It was one day he sat me down and asked "Rolly I need to ask you something. We know that you are in need and yet you have refused any help. The question I have for you my friend is what kind of a heart are you giving with if you refuse to allow us to help you."

The lesson I learned that day was one that has stuck with me for years. "How is it that I give and what kind of heart do I give with? I was reading a hub tonight that impacted me greatly. A well respected writer shared with us where he lived and what he had. He says he has little and yet this man has much. You see what he has comes from the heart not his wallet or his treasures it come directly from his heart. To me he has given the greatest gift of all, he has given himself. If he is reading this he will know who he is and to you my friend you have touched my heart this day. I know you have something we all strive to have and that is joy. It was a blessing to read your words tonight and I thank you for sharing with me and many others and opening the door to your life.

Our Words

So what is it my dear friends I can share with you that may be profound. I think the power of the written word. Can I capture the sun and give it to you. Well I have tried and not sure if it will do justice. Can I give something humble or can it be filled with pride. Better yet it can come from the heart where these words come from. I have heard words are cheap and I agree. But words spoken from the heart are of more value than anything money can buy. They have a value no man can put on them. They can not be taken away or taken back. Words from the heart cannot be destroyed. They are real and no matter the effort they will prevail.

I have drifted in and out of this community for going on four years and no matter the battles I have faced with Hub Pages or the few who have tainted my past history I write tonight and say thank you for putting up with all the rants. You the unseen who have blessed me with your words from the heart and you are family and I thank you. Stay true to what you write and mean the words that you share. They are that of the greatest gift you can offer because if they are meant then they come from the heart. Above all else know that you are dearly loved and treasured greater than any gold that can be offered. May these few and simple words bless you.

Rolly, The island sounds like paradise. What a wonderful way to live. I think your message was profound. What is in my heart? How often do we take a look at that? Some years ago I had someone tell me it was time I became a grateful receiver. I determined from that my problem was pride. As we age we learn. As so many people say if I only knew then what I know now, but today is good. I'm happy, fulfilled and have a grateful heart. Blessings to you my friend.

I am still hoping and waiting to find my paradise, and I'm sure I will find it one day. You are such an admirable, caring and compassionate man. Your amazing soul has touched so many hearts in a very positive way all your life, so I say, just go for what makes you happy. Now it's time for Rolly A Chabot to enjoy his paradise on earth.

Hi Pam... you have wrapped up all I wanted to say in a few words." Today is goo, I am happy" I think that is so key to having joy is to find it in the smallest of things. From there we come to notice the bigger things in life.

Hi Rolly A Chabot - There's so much in my heart I am grateful for and especially this day I thank you for opening your heart and sharing the beauty of your surroundings and the simplicity of being. My happiness comes from my child's laughter and the look of softness in his eyes, watching an inspiring sunset on the horizon while standing barefoot on the beach, a sweet song so powerful it moves me to tears, and simply touching my heart and truly feeling it beat - Your hub's heartfelt openness has sparked these beautiful reminders by the fireside. Thank you. Smiles from Florida...

Like you, I have wandered back to Hubpages after several months hiatus, during which I went on my own soul-seeking journey. I say, go with what makes you happy, Rolly. When we are happy and our hearts are full we have so much more to give.

I have visited Galiano island -- so very beautiful. Your pictures fill me with longing to return to the Pacific coast. Ah -- Saltspring. Ah -- Pacific Rim Park. Ah -- Wickinninnish. Ah -- Tofino. Ah -- Botanical Beach.

But there is no dirth of beauty here in Florida, either. Strange how we always hanker for what we don't have in front of us.

I hope you'll take the time to visit some of my musings on my own voyage of the soul. Friends always, Lynda

Hi Rolly. I left a comment here a few hours ago, but apparently it didn't take. Maybe you have you "approve first before posting" thing on. If so, I'll wait. If not, I'll post again, later. Lynda

Aha. This one posted so the problems was mine.

What I said before: Like you, I have taken several months hiatus from Hubpages while sorting out other things. Kind of a journey of the soul, I guess. But I'm back.

In answer to the question you pose above: I say go for whatever makes you happy. When we are happy and our hearts content we have so much more to give. And on the other point you make: When we give but will not receive, it is our egos at work, not our souls. Why do we deny the joy of giving to those around us? Perhaps, the act of giving but refusing gifts is one way to feel superior?

I have visited Galiano Island, years ago. A beautiful place, to be sure. The pictures you share here fill my heart with longing to return to Canada's west coast and many of my favorite places: Saltspring Island, Wickinninish Beach, Tofino, Botanical Beach...

But then, there is no dearth of beauty here in Florida. Strange how we yearn for what is not in front of us. I hope you'll find the time to read some of my new postings. It has been an interesting journey. Friends always, Lynda

Hi Lynda... it is so good to hear from you and it looks like all you posted is up and running here... it has been a while since we have seen you.

I agree with you in regards to the Gulf Islands and all they have to offer. The one thing I have looked at no matter where I go is the beauty of the region.

You are right and I agree and think I will be looking further into where and the whats of the future. We all need a place to slip into and call home.

Heading over now to take a peek at what you have been up to... great to see you again Lynda...

Hi Volcalcoach... Thank your this lovely comment and especially to hear that you will be back to spend a little time at the Fireside. It is the people who visit who make the difference in any of our writing. Blessed to hear that you found something that touched you.

I often think of just what it is when we leave this world we take with us. Material and things are left but it is the relationships we have formed that we carry close no matter where we go...

Hi Rolly, I have finally found a little time to read some of your hubs and I am so glad that I did. What a beautiful spirit and heart you have - we are kindred in some ways....I find so much peace and pleasure in the gifts of nature that have been given to us...from the music of the birds, bugs and animals to the beauty in a blade of grass, flower, trees, sky and ocean. Some may think me strange for actually enjoying being alone, but what they do not know is that I am never alone....I love that your hub "home" is called the Fireside Chat....fireplace fires, campfires...have ways of dipping into your soul and providing such peace, fellowship and contentedness. Your island sounds like a perfect place for you...I would love to visit. We live 15 minutes from the beach here on the East coast and there is a barrier island close by where you are allowed to have fires on the beach. We love to go out on a cool night, start a fire, watch the rolling of the waves on the sand, listen to the crashing of them and feel the salty sea breeze on our cheeks as the sun goes down and the moon rises over the ocean. It is the best way to release, and realize just how much - in the simple things in life - that we have to be thankful for...and I am thankful for you and your wonderful hubs and sharing your spirit with all of us. We are blessed.

Over the years I have travelled a great deal and even the most barren of places has a beauty all its own and takes little or no time to locate if you are open minded and willing.

Glad you and yours can take the time to enjoy a fire and the time to just be still...
