Be Aware

Let’s take a step back and appreciate this month for what it is, thirty days of the year. For thirty days there will be no celebrations of any particular group, no awareness drives or causes, just one month of the year to sit back and reflect. Wait, that will make it national reflection month, is that taken?

Just A Regular Month, month promises to be what all these other special months are not, a regular month. No rallies, no 5k’s, no fund raisers, no ribbons, just kick back and watch the calendar do the work as the days pass and just a regular month picks up steam and catches on worldwide.

It will be tough to find a month that is not already taken, so feel free to pick your own. There will be no trademarks, no copyright infringements as everyone will own a piece of the pie, it's a month without rules and regulations.

Without parades and fanfare, Just a regular month, will give us a momentary reprieve of sales and spending or protesting and boycotting and let us do the mundane. We will go to work, raise a family, spend time with a spouse or partner and stop rushing. Maybe you can get that garage cleaned up or fix that leaky faucet. Just a regular month, or JARM, gives you the power of choice, you can make it happen without feeling selfish or uncommitted.

Let's enjoy a month untouched by Hallmark and unblemished by retail. Just a regular month is best enjoyed with a head down and our feet on the ground. JARM will be known as the one month where we do the hard work and make good decisions. JARM will be known as the time to work towards paying off that credit card, taking pride in driving a used car, and delaying personal gratitude. JARM will be that one time of year that we buck the trends and make tough decisions.

In the future we may be flooded with advertisements:This weekend only, our inventory is slashed for Just A Regular Month, come now and receive up to 50% off of regular prices!!! HURRY ACT NOW!!!! This won’t last long, hurry before this regular month ends!!!

But for now, there will be no free t-shirts, bumpers tickers, wrist bands or facebook page, JARM Is just as advertised, a regular time for regular folks.

Awareness months are needed, many serve great purposes and raise money for research. Cancer, racism, autism, AIDS, and horrible pop music are all things that need to be eradicated, but let’s take one month, just one month, and treat ourselves to a few weeks of life without worry.

Hopefully it can be a time when we can see past our religious/political/cultural differences and unite as we share one common goal, enjoying life. It can be a time for reflection and focusing on our own lives, hopefully if we can work on ourselves everything else will be easier to manage.

I’m not sure if JARM will catch on as it may be too blue collar for some. Its no frills, distraction free approach may seem old fashioned in our multitasking world as it is a month with one sole purpose, there is no purpose. So finish that book, play with the kids, enjoy the weekends, this is your month, do with it what you will.

As is your norm, you did it again. You always seem to find a way to take something the rest of the world doesn't even notice, or if we did, we griped about it without doing anything about it, and make it pertinent and hysterical at the same time. There are so many of these dad blamed ridiculous holidays and such now. There are official / unofficial / regional / national / local / worldwide / religious / age / race / color / creed / marital / friendship / sexual orientation / familial / heritage / animal loving / fur wearing / boot scootin' / rubber neckin' / jean wearin' / disease fightin' / war stoppin ' days, weeks, and months that a man can't wake up without running into another one! And Heaven forbid it was the one he HAD to remember due to a certain spouse or child. I mean really; we men should be able to use this as an excuse for forgetting our anniversary or our children's birthday, right? Or that day that comes early in the year; what was it? Something about cherubs or flowers, or maybe candy? I forget, but you know which one I'm talking about, right? There are so many, how are we to remember them all? And to think, National Excuse Day only comes around once a year. I think we need one of those at least once a week! Great hub weestro! Loved it! Keep finding those ways to tickle our funny bones. You are the Master!

Figures Jeannie, let's just create more months!

Thank you kathleen, I agree, can't I fight breast cancer all year?

      I hear you Julie, thanks!

Let me know what you come up with Phil! Thanks!

I've added it to the list tillsontitan, some causes are more important than others....*.cough cough backpack safety cough cough*

Mary Craig 5 years ago from New York that even possible in this constantly moving society? They'd slip in cellular phone month or computer month most likely. I thoroughly enjoy your train of thought however and wish we could just stop and smell the roses.

However, in view of the list you provided I would like to add Sept. is also Thyroid Cancer Awareness Month (my granddaughter has thyroid cancer so it is close to my heart.)

      Voted up, funny, and interesting.

I'm all for JARM, I am just having trouble determining which month it should be. Not January, too many birthdays. Maybe February. Not March, April, May, June, July or August. Not September or October, maybe November and definitely not December. I'll have to give it some more thought; thanks for the great idea!

This was so good! Everything is an excuse for celebration. What happened to normal life?

I enjoyed that. I think it is important for us to appreciate everything just as it is without having to make it more important than something else. Great concept!

But wait... Grandparent's Day is coming up... Hallmark has already claimed a day this month. But you are right... other than that, this month is pretty bare. Happy JARM to you!

Awesome idea! I've actually taken these awareness month listings and turned them into hubs. It is interesting that this month only has one federal holiday and no card holidays. But yeah, it's ridiculous how many awareness months exist. I mean College Savings Month, isn't every month that? At least for students, that is?! Great job!
