Making a decision

When making a decision there are some very important things you need to remember.

If you have to talk yourself into accepting a certain decision, then it it probably not the right decision.

Your first instinct is usually the correct one.

Think about how you will feel in the future about your decision.

Think about the situation. Have you had a decision like this to make before? What happened? Where you happy with the results of your decision?

How to make a good decision

  • Listen to your instincts
  • List your options
  • Gather facts
  • Don't make a snap decision
  • Make a list of pros and cons
  • Know there are no guarantees
  • Do not get stuck and do nothing
  • Don't let fear stop you
  • Know the problem
  • Never forget your values
  • Think of all possible outcomes
  • Come up with more than one possible choice
  • Make sure whatever you decide allows you to look yourself in the face
  • Talk to your friends and family
  • Ask yourself "What's the worst than can happen"
  • Think of who this decision will effect
  • Visualize positive results
  • Do not second guess yourself
  • Make a decision
  • Don't over think your decision
  • Stick to your decision

Making decisions quotes

A wise man makes his own decisions, an ignorant man follows the public opinion. ~ Chinese Proverb

It does not take much strength to do things, but it requires great strength to decide on what to do. ~ Elbert Hubbard

Your life changes the moment you make a new, congruent, and committed decision. ~ Anthony Robbins

A peacefulness follows any decision, even the wrong one. ~ Rita Mae Brown

It's not hard to make decisions when you know what your values are. ~ Roy Disney

Good decisions come from experience, and experience comes from bad decisions. ~ Unknown

A peacefulness follows any decision, even the wrong one. ~ Rita Mae Brown

You have only always to do what is right. It will become easier by practice, and you enjoy in the midst of your trials the pleasure of an approving conscience. ~ Robert E. Lee

Sometimes you make the right decision, sometimes you make the decision right. ~ Phillip C. McGraw

It is our choices...that show what we truly are, far more than our abilities. ~ J. K. Rowling

But the rule seems to be that the bigger and more life-changing the decision, the less it will seem like a decision at all. ~ Hugh Mackay

How your decisions can affect your life

The decisions you make will affect every part of your life. Even the most trivial decisions can become important ones. I recently was reading a good website that brought it all home to me. I suddenly understood how each thing we do, say, or decide affects our lives.

The website jimsblog.jimbakkershow.com offered up the perfect explanation:

Your thoughts create your emotions.

Your emotions prompt your decisions,

Your decisions determine your actions.

Your actions, repeated over time, become habits.

Your habits develop and demonstrate your character.

Your character produces your destiny.

After reading this I understood perfectly that our decisions do affect everything in our lives.

Different types of decisions

There are different types of decisions that we will make in our lives:

  • Life changing decisions

Life changing decisions are the ones that ultimately affect the rest of our lives.

  • Learning decisions

Learning decisions are the little ones we make every day that we learn from. Such as, making the decision to touch a hot stove after being told it is hot. When we touch it we get burned and learn not to touch it again.

  • Moral decisions

Moral decisions are the ones that teach us right from wrong. We learn to make the right or moral decisions here.

Don't just stand there, decide what road to follow.

Importance of making good decisions

Our decisions many times affect other people. It is important to take into consideration what type of affect our decision will have on others.

Our decisions reflect our values. Our actions will show more powerfully than words what our values are.

Our decisions will set an example for those who follow us. As a parent you want to make sure you make the right decision so it send the right message to your loved ones.

Not making a decision is a decision in itself. It is a decision to let what happens happen.

Audrey, I used to have problems making decisions. I though if I didn't make one things would work out. Sometimes they do and sometimes you're sorry you didn't make a decision.

Hi Koffee, I could have sworn I commented on this! lol! seriously though making good decisions does make us feel better, its a bit like a great weight being lifted off of us. But I have noticed in my life that the decisions I want to make sometimes go against others in the family and they always tend to win! lol! not always good, great hub, and voted and shared, nell

Sometimes I think the worst thing we can do is fail to make a decision--I tend to be a plodder in most of this process--I get information, weigh things out and then see how I feel about things--

Naomi's Banner, I agree, getting up in the morning is a decision that most people don't realize they are making. Sometimes you just have to make that decision, even if it's wrong.

Good hub and great quotes, Koffee! I especially like the quote from Dr. Phil, the quote in swan pic, and the cartoon lady quote saying that not making a decision is a decision. So true!

I like your points about making decisions, KKGals. If I had to sum them up simplistically, I would say your behavior (decisions) determines your consequences.

Love this Hub. Decisions are something we must tackle daily. Getting out of bed is a decision. Going to work is a decision. I've known people that couldn't make a decision if their life depended on it. Then if they do finally make a decision they continually second guess themselves. Love the useful information, especially the eye appealing format! Great job!

I like this. I have not always made good decisions, but i'm learning. Making a list of the pros and cons is a good idea. I also like the quotes, esp. Rita Mae Brown's " A peacefulness follows any decision, even the wrong one. " Thank's again for sharing wisdom....
