Lake Sam Rayburn, East Texas
Lake Sam Rayburn is located in East Texas, in the heart of the East Texas Piney Woods, and is fed mainly by the Angelina River. With 142,700 surface acres, it is the largest lake fully enclosed inside the state of Texas. There are places to fish, swim and camp. Sam Rayburn is the result of the Army Corps of Engineers constructing a dam on the Angelina River, beginning in 1956.
There is also plenty of open, stump-free area for water skiing and boating. In the forests lining the lake, you will find trails for hiking and bird watching. Lake Sam Rayburn is home to many fishing tournament each year, including the McDonald’s Big Bass Splash, which offers many coveted prizes.
I write often about The Lake Near Home. I took some photos that I wanted to share, along with a facts about the lake. This is also the lake I reference in Camping: Part 2 of the Lake Near Home. I hope you enjoy my photos.
