Legacy Line - a poem

Updated on February 19, 2014

Since first hearing his songs with Slipknot and Stone Sour, I have been intrigued with the lyrics of Corey Taylor. In my opinion, they are extremely emotional and intelligent. I find that Mr. Taylor chooses his words well. They are not really visceral, but they do seem to come from deep within him, which makes them so cogent to me.

The poem below is greatly influenced by his themes. Perfect examples would be "Zzyzx Rd." from Stone Sour's Come What(ever) May album (2006) and "From Can to Can't" from Sound City - Real to Reel, soundtrack (2013) to Dave Grohl's film of the same name. If you get a chance to listen to these songs, you will hear how his lyrics have an influence on my poem.

Blurring and Fading the Lines to Blackness
Blurring and Fading the Lines to Blackness

Legacy Line

so young and idealistic
so ambitious
and i drew a line
setting something beyond a goal
more like an expectation

idealism faded to realism
and maturity set in
and the line blurred
the destination changed
from definite to hopeful

eyes open to pragmatism
and an effort changes course
as to cross the line
thus, the ache to leave a legacy
achromatizes to dying in obscurity

The choices and sacrifices we make voluntary, summed up in a few short lines, well written and poignant.
