After that night Ariane started feeling dead inside. She started hating men. All the men in her life that she thought had loved her left her. The new ones she was meeting hurt her. It seemed never ending. She didn't have a father to look back on to guide her on who to be with or what to do. Her dad was gone too. Just like everybody else.

Ariane started to not love anymore. At least not men. She gave up on men and finding love. She missed Jack still, but not as much. "What kind of man leaves his girlfriend like that?" she thought to herself. Even her little plan to be with Ken didn't work. Ken didn't give a s**t about what she felt or who she was. He didn't care about any woman she learned. The worst part was that after she tried to tell her friend Gabby about it she didn't believe her and thought she was crazy. She was too jealous Ken didn't ask her out. Gabby told Ariane that she asked for it. That if it were her in that situation. That wouldn't have happened.

"F**ck everyone." Ariane thought. "I don't need anyone telling me what to do or need anyone's love. Nobody has any love to give anyway."

She started becoming stronger and wilder. Not caring about what people thought of her anymore. Not people pleasing anymore. She started partying a lot. Started drinking and going out. She became way more outgoing. Her heart dead to love. She left a trail of broken hearts wherever she went.

Ken started playing mental games with her. Calling her. At first, being confused with everything she played his game. Trying to win his heart over that's all she knew. Then she gave up and let everything go. He still tried to get her to come back, but she wouldn't come. Gabby still ran into him saying this and that and how he's in law school now and how he's changed. Ariane didn't care. She thought Gabby was an idiot. She should date Ken. Who cares if he's in law school? Some people only care about the outside. She'll learn one day. "These people around me are so dense and fake." she thought. " I hate being here."

Fast forward to that night at Chuck's place and the phone call to Jack.

The reason she ended up at Chuck's in the first place was because she ran into Mira who was Chuck's roommate at the bar she was at with Ken that night. Mira told Ariane she had sex with Jack when he lived at the house with her. Ariane couldn't believe it. He had sex with this short unattractive girl? Mira had greasy dark hair and huge bug eyes with dark circles underneath them. She looked like she didn't sleep for days. She had a raunchy trashiness about her. Ken laughed when Mira told her. Ken was trying to make himself feel better by saying what a pig Jack was for sleeping with a troll like Mira. He failed at making himself look good. Ariane remembered dropping Jack off at a house that looked like this one. She felt so stupid. She was nineteen at the time, but she should've known better. He didn't even invite her in! He was sleeping with this girl using her for a place to stay. Could she feel anymore dumb and disgusted with everyone around her?

Mira was all too happy to tell her to come by to talk to Chuck about Jack. Chuck was happy about it too. Chuck told Ariane how Jack would run around trying to impress all the girls around him and Ariane was never there. He also said Jack said that Ariane was beautiful and saved him from his life when Chuck saw her photo fall out of his notebook. Aww...how sweet she thought. Yeah right. All of that time wasted. She gave up caring about herself and her education. She became depressed for this asshole! The more she heard the more angry she got.

Then came up Beth. Beth who she forgot about. The girl he was trying to sleep with that she found out about after breaking into his email account. The one she helped him with that he never changed the password to. She decided to check it after she became suspicious of him disappearing and being distant. Beth told Ariane all about how Jack was trying to "woo" her. Beth and Ariane became friends after that. Ariane didn't want to be her friend at first, but decided it would be a good thing to do after awhile. She felt sorry for Beth because she was kind of naive and depressed. Beth was very trusting and very insecure. She reminded her of herself. Well, a way more extreme, unstable and confused version of herself. Beth killed herself four years later. She jumped in front of a metra train leaving her purse on the ledge so people knew who she was. Ariane was just glad she had known her just for a little while. She remembered Beth calling her for advice or to just talk about things. She had a history of going into hospitals after suicide threats and abusive relationships. She didn't understand why Beth had killed herself though. She seemed so much better the last time they talked. I guess that's how it happens though. One day you are okay, the next you feel like hell.

Ariane was ready to leave. The sun was coming up and she didn't think Jack was going to call her back that night. She walked to her car and closed the door. A car pulled up next to her and she looked up. It was Jack.
