Letting Down the Guard

Updated on February 17, 2015

So used to being alone even when with someone else

Rarely showing or daring to share anything that's strongly felt

Because learning to trust that way is so very hard

It's a piece of self kept closely under guard

Because it cannot be undone once it is exposed

And one cannot unsee what has already been shown

It's never far from the back of the mind

That a friend can cease to be a friend at any time

People come and people judge you

Usually feeling that there is quite a lot to be assumed

Never stopping to find out which truth is really true

And missing quite a lot while choosing to presume

Some will offer to assist with an ulterior motive

To brag about it, usually while snubbing their noses

Others will truly mean the things they say

Yet they are not meant to be there to stay

Arising from the most precious of loving hearts

They are there to do their parts

In providing temporary moments of relief

Without seeming to see right through a human being

Sometimes, every now and then

One who takes the time to see finds a friend

And then the one that has been seen

Finds something that she did not think she'd need

Somewhere within that new discovery

Lies an even deeper secret just to being

That one must always remain true to self

Ever careful not to take on the doubts of someone else

Yet another truth there within to learn

Is how to recognize some in return

Those precious few that are worth the chance

Worth the risk just so that the heart can dance

Friends of every kind are gifts from above

Precious beings made for us to love

But there are few who choose to love long after

More is shared than just the laughter

Friends who make the choice to care even at our worst

Because the person, not the circumstance, was seen first

Are part of what makes trying so worthwhile

Even if someone else attempts to make it yet another trial

A friend, someone who gives us the wings to fly, so worth while keeping...the friend who sees our guarded self, our all. So nicely put, your poem of friendship, and trust, and so "Worth the risk just so that the heart can dance."

What a beautiful, well written poem about true friendship and why different people come into out lives when needed. Voted up.

This is awesome and full of truth. A true friend is hard to find, but when you do, they always come through. I loved this..

Hi ArtDiva! It is very much worth the risk, though I've learned quite a bit about the kind of person to take that kind of 'risk' on. Otherwise, it is easier to be a friend to someone else while remaining mostly guarded, if that makes sense.

Hello Jodah. I am a firm believer in Earth Angels. I've had too many people bless my life for just a second in time, but the impact has been lasting. Then there are the few that do come and stay. . .and they are just precious.

Thank you, Eric! It never ceases to surprise me when someone says they want to return to read again. I just don't have any words for a compliment such as that. haha

Hi Ruby. So glad to see you here. Yes, true friends are hard to find and life sometimes takes them in their own directions and forces them to focus on their own circumstances so that they cannot see what another is going through. But - like in the song- they come back and are 'here now'.

What a great poem and oh so true! real friends are there forever, and keep all your secrets, but there is always someone who will take a little bit of knowledge and make up their own stories, I know that one very well! lol! great poem, voted up and shared! nell

Haha, Nell, I've been surrounded by those people. They are not the kind to get too close to, at least not in general. There might be exceptions. But it is a lot like the childhood game of telephone. By the time word gets back to me, it is far from truth or only half true. And then there have been people I don't even know that knew things about me. Go figure. I just figure those that talk about others that way to me will talk about me.

Shannie ,!You said it right in one comment " learn who to take the risk on ", otherwise , Live and love with a passion all your own ! If you show that passion to people they can't help but respond in kind , even in today's world of 'I love you now and tomorrow I look away ' fashion ! I love how you bared your heart !..........:-]

Hello, Ed. "I love you today and tomorrow I look away." The world is full of those kinds of people, aren't they? I've met enough of them to know to treasure the real deal when it is found. Baring my heart, when I do, is much easier in writing.

Thank you, ps. Laughter is great, no doubt, but it is a special thing to have someone else to talk to and share company with, good times and bad.
