Licking Flames

http://frankatanacio.hubpages.com/hub/Pour-Pattern

She moved quickly away

From the safety exit,

As the flames would spray,

Heading through the burning rooms,

And only fear was on display,

The smoke would choke,

And she was gasping,

She was also having

A difficult time grasping

What was happening around her,

And her breath was hard to catch,

She felt somehow detached

From her burnt and aching body,

And the blazing heat

Seemed to wrap itself around

Her like a sheet,

Smothering the sounds,

Her energy would not last,

Too much happened

To her too fast,

Shadows would talk,

And she forced herself

To slow her walk,

Then she saw two burnt bodies,

The bones blackened,

As their ghosts would pray,

All the blood and bodily fluids,

Had long since boiled away,

Leaving only dust, crust,

Around the remains,

She was too late to save them,

As she turned only to face the licking flames.

Brother Frank, this reminds me of seeing a 5th floor bank catch fire, the young secretaries held on as long as they could. but eventually had to drop to their deaths, one at a time. It was a most distressing scene. Turns out the banks fat cats got out frist on the other side of the bank where the fire hadn't reached. What a travesty of justice -so cowardly.

Frank, I just read the most beautiful poem over at Mhatter's, I really should have gone straight to bed, however I saw this and I had to check it out. So instead of soft words and sweet dreams, I'll be seeing burnt bodies and bodily fluids. I think I'll just go back to work. :))

Brilliant; as only you can do it.

Could almost feel the flames jumping at me. A neighbors house burned a couple of months ago. The fire started when a flame from the stove catching a potholder. Neighbor, had been ill, couldn't move fast enough to stem the fire, she escaped, but the damage was significant.

      Your description was chilling.

As I read this, the sun is hazy and I can smell the smoke here in Melbourne, far away from those dreadful bushfires in Gippsland. The threat from fire and the fear of it is very real here this summer. You expressed it well.

I couldn't think of a better description of fire than licking flames as it consumes all the moisture around it in that very way. Awesome. Like us, fire licks and drinks in water until its overwhelmed in it and drowns.

You described such agony, futile, lost, knowing she was doomed as the flames licked nearby, consuming everything in its reach. Indeed an awful way to go, I pray the toxic fumes takes her before the flame. Well written my poet, I felt the heat licking nearby.

Hi Frank, where do you get your ideas from? It's like this little spark that grows into the large flame that consumes your readers. This is just one example-it's an amazing poem. I think what I'm so in awe of is the way you so cleverly tell a story, the details that evoke the emotions from the images you present with each carefully chosen word. Two thumbs up and an Awesome. :)
