Lilly Lionel's Lion

Updated on July 5, 2015

Story 1

In a little village, down town Soweto, lived the Farmer family.

Father Lionel Farmer, Mother Lionel Farmer and their young adorable daughter, Lilly Lionel Farmer. Lilly was liked by all and sundry. She was an adorable lass in the community. Both young and old liked her.

Father Lionel Farmer and his wife, Mother Lionel Farmer, were both farmers and always worked on their cocoa farm.

Lilly loved to play in the green fields with grasshoppers just like the young boys in her neighbourhood.

One Saturday morning, as Lilly leaned against the post of her window to behold the rising sun, she saw one of her school mates, Sandra, riding a new bicycle and she yearned to have exactly the same.

She told her father about the bicycle but Father Lionel Farmer did not have enought money and did not keep the truth away from his dear daughter.

Lilly knowing her father could not get her the bicycle, she hatched a business plan. Lilly went into the green field, and with a skill acquired from her years of playing in the field with grasshoppers, caught a lot of those little creatures.

Lilly took the grasshoppers to school and sold them at a cost to the weaker boys who loved grasshoppers but were not strong enough to catch them in the field.

Lilly continued this business for a period of four months and earned almost half of the cost of the bicycle. She gave the money to her father and explained her motive.

Father Lionel Farmer was so touched by the brave step taken by his daughter. He held her tight to his chest and gave her a kiss on the cheek.

Father Lionel Farmer informed his wife about Lilly's smart ordeal. She was amazed as well. They had come to realize how much their daughter wanted that bicycle and decided to surprise her.

The next day, Lilly prepared to go to school and knowing her parents were out on the farm, she decided to get more of the grasshoppers to go sell at school. She entered the classroom and there went a loud cry from her parents, teacher, and classmates: "surprise!!!". She was astonished and for a moment, she did not know what was happening.

Father and Mother Lionel Farmer embraced their daughter, and pointing to the back of the class room, stood a new bicycle. Unknown to Lilly, her parents bought the bicycle the previous day and had decided to surprise her.

Lilly looked at her new bicycle and with a smile on her face, said: "This is my bicycle and i call it, Lion, because i believe it stands tall."
